2017

Here you'll find all the Mewsletters that were sent out during this year.  If you missed any, you'll be able to catch up on all the exciting and informative articles and stories here.

“I have studied many philosophers and many cats.  The wisdom of cats is infinitely superior.”

French philosopher Hippolyte Adolphe Taine

Hi everyone and welcome to the first Mewsletter of the New Year.  Apologies for the confusion in sending out a Scratching Post with a Mewsletter heading from December – midmonth.  This is the Mewsletter and I do hope you enjoy it. And a warm welcome to the newbies that have joined us recently.

What do you think of the wonderful Valentine’s Day slant that Aida Marina has put on the Daily Mews logo? Great, isn’t it? Thank you, Aida.

January is named after the two-headed god, Janus; one head looks back, and the other looks forward.  January is traditionally a month for new beginnings; it’s the beginning of a new year and also a time when we often make resolutions – which may, or may not – last anything from an hour to a month, or a lifetime if we really get stuck in.  Have you made any New Year’s resolutions? If your cat(s) were to make any, what do you think they would try to achieve throughout 2017?

I think, for a lot of people, losing weight is the main goal.  Whether it’s for a summer holiday, or a wedding or just to feel healthier, it’s a problem that many of us face at some time in our lives.  And not just us humans.  Felines (and canines) can pile on the pounds through no fault of their own.  We eat badly, we give our naughty food to our pets and then because we don’t exercise, neither do they.

We, here at the Daily Mews office have been donning our lycra leggings, our sweatbands and trying to tuck our bellies into our boots in a bid to get fit.  Casey and Gibbs have put their heads together and have come up with a plan which they’ll reveal in their new column.

I’ve had a weight problem for the last 23 years and Casey is exhibiting a little bit of extra ‘fur’ around his middle.  He came to me with a solution recently.  He would help me lose my weight if I helped him regain his svelte shape – it’s a win-win situation.  I’ve created a new section called ‘Fighting the Flab the Feline Way’ which will be in the humour section.  The reason it’ll be in there and not in the Feline Fitness section is because it will be written by cats – and we all know that cats have a wicked sense of humour.  So, if you or your cat have a weight problem, and you think you could help each other to shed a few pounds or kilos, then you’ve come to the right place.

We already have ‘lured’ some of Team TDM (The Daily Mews) members to join us and you’ll hear from Bumble in her bid to get her Dad, Jem Vanston, back on track, and Dumpty, Gabion and Chav Cat as they try the impossible: slim down their Staff in time for a cruise in August and Ellen (15 cats and counting) is working out with her cat Phoebe.

I don’t need to see pictures of you – but it would be nice to see pictures of your cats. They will write the piece from their point of view – it can be a one-off piece or an ongoing series keeping us informed of the progress you’re making.  The only main criteria is that it is funny.  If  you’re not sure if it is funny enough, send me a sample of your intended article and I’ll let you know.  And there is absolutely no judgement here – being overweight is not something to be ashamed of but with your cat(s) on your side, you’ll soon be in that swimsuit for the summer.

If your cat(s) would like to help you lose weight, do get them to write to us and we’ll add them to the list.  We’ll do monthly updates until we are fed up with trying!

February is also the month of love and we have some lovely pieces from our resident team of writers for you to enjoy.  You may not have any spare money but a smile costs nothing.  Or give someone a hug.

ON WITH THE MEWS:

AMAZING CATS:

Really, this heading should be ‘Amazing Dad’ because Darren Bailey is one amazing human being.  Ceci, is the little kitten that he rescued – and later adopted – and this is an introduction to her amazing story.  They have a Facebook page – the link is at the bottom of the article.

CAT QUESTIONS FOR SQUIRT:

Squirt was indisposed this month so Casey and Gibbs rallied to the cause and answered Dumpty’s question.

Dumpty’s Valentine’s Day Dilemma

FELINE FITNESS:

Have your kitties been listless, depressed, sleeping more than usual? Believe it or not, they can get something similar to the human illness SAD (Seasonal Affected Disorder) and the symptoms are very much like the ones we might exhibit.  So, what can you do to help your kitty feel less depressed during the winter months?

SAD

Sally Edwins wrote a piece a month or so back and I gave the link to the website the article was on, because it was rather long.  She subsequently edited it and now you can read it in the Feline Fitness section:

And that just about wraps it up for this month.  The next update will be towards the end of March and there may be a Scratching Post midway to keep you ticking over.

Until then, take care, keep warm and hold those stomachs in…

Hi Everyone and a very warm welcome to all of you, and those of you who have recently subscribed.

We have a packed issue this month so I’m not going to detain you further with my ramblings …

We have three new columnists this month and you’ll meet them all shortly.

I have two lots of very sad news to tell you.  Dumpty, our long term ‘faded film star diva’, sadly had a heart attack and died very suddenly in February.  Only the previous day, she had put paw to keyboard and was about to write an ongoing column on fighting the flab with her Maid.  Her assistant, Gabion, has kindly, though very nervously and tearfully, said he would carry on with the fight.  Dumpty was 18 years of age and prior to going to live at Tom Cat Towers (where Willi Whizkas once lived) she had been the subject of terrible cruelty.

Our second devastating loss is Floot, the Blue-eyed Cat, who lived in Thassos, Greece, with her humans, Su and Ian Wiles.  She died of natural causes but I’m not sure of her age.  Her house mate, Black Pete, was poisoned only two days before she passed away, so Su and Ian are absolutely in bits.

Please remember Carol Lake (Dumpty’s Maid) and Su and Ian Wiles (Floot and Black Pete’s’ human parents) in your prayers.  If you want to write something to them, write to me first and I’ll pass it on.

Let’s get on with the MEWS:

BOOK QUIZ:

Congratulations to Janette Golder (from the UK) who was first with all five correct answers.  Well done, Janette.  If you want to see the answers, please click on the link:

CASEY’S CHATS:

Casey isn’t an overly demonstrative cat but recently he decided that being cuddled wasn’t all that bad after all.

Cuddles – the benefits

CECI’S CORNER:

Say hello to Ceci, our newest feline writer.  You’ll find her in the Amazing Cats section (go to the Home Page, then find Articles, then Cat Chat, then Amazing Cats, and then, you’ll see Ceci’s Corner) – do take a look.  You can visit her Facebook page and befriend her.

Let me introduce myself …

ED KOSTRO:

Ed wrote to me last month about a little cat he’s named Harrienyet that he recently rescued.  Astonishingly, Harrienyet is Ed’s 35th animal rescue.  Here’s here story:

Harrienyet

FIGHTING THE FLAB THE FELINE WAY:

Fighting the Flab the Feline Way has netted a few more interested parties the first being Bumble and Jem.

BUMBLE and JEM:

Bumble has joined the swelling ranks of felines hell bent on slimming down their humans.  Read what he has to say here:

Fighting the flab the Bumble way

Here’s a little piece that Jem wrote to explain how he wrote about Bumble.

The story of Bumble …

CASEY and GIBBS:

Casey and Gibbs have been trying all sorts of shenanigans and skullduggery to help me shed the wobbles.  Here’s their latest installment:

Progress of sorts …

DIETING WITH DENVER:

Denver has written an occasional article for the Mewsers’ Mewsings section before but as he now attends a weight monitoring clinic at his local veterinary surgery, I thought it prudent to give him his own column.  He has written his first (of what I hope are many) pieces about his dieting experience.

Dieting with Denver

PHOEBE’S WEIGHT LOSS TIPS:

I had a problem with a picture of Phoebe pole-dancing last month.  This has now been remedied and you can see her article – with her picture – here:

Phoebe’s weight loss tips:

Marjorie Dorfman has written a very funny piece about her cat Nero and the extraordinary lengths he went to in order to help her while she worked out.

Fit, Fat or just a cat: the story of Nero

Q.T. Penny, the first female spokescat for Simon Teakettle Ink (Canada), has written a brief account of how she keeps herself and her human, Bobbi, in trim.

Penny and Bobbi

THE FELINES OF FALLON HOUSE:

We’ve not heard from the Fallon Felines for a while, so it was a lovely surprise when Tilly wrote to tell me about some very special ‘easy pill cat putty’ that she was able to use to take her medication.  It’s always hard to get cats to take pills so for anyone that does have difficulty, take a leaf from Tilly’s book:

Easy pill cat putty

Here is the second of our new columnists. Gabes (or Gabion Tzchugge to give him his full and proper name) has been through quite a lot recently so Casey and Gibbs thought it would be rather nice to give him his own column where he can express himself.

Here’s Gabes first few attempts at his new column:

GABES’ GABBLINGS:

Gabes is 2 years old today (Sunday, 9th April) so we wish him a very happy birthday.  Here’s his first offering:

Soapbox, the teddy

There’s been lots of shenanigans going in Tom Cat Towers where Gabes lives.  He doesn’t know if he’s coming or going.

Secret Squirrels: Part 1

HOME PAGE MESSAGE:

Britain has been bathed in glorious sunshine these past few days. I found Gibbs stretched out in a sun puddle and that prompted me to write this month’s home page message.  Just go to www.thedailymews.com and scroll down a little bit – and there it is!

Under it, you’ll see a joke which Jem Vanston sent me.  Enjoy!

NAPPING ON A SUNBEAM:

Carol Turner’s tribute to Little Dumpty Roo, is very moving.  A little Himalayan Lynx, she had a tough period between her first owner’s death and Carol adopting her.

Little Dumpty Roo – 1999 - 2017

Paul and Jackie Sullivan have written a beautiful tribute to their 21 year old cat, Sammy, who sadly died last week.

Sammy Sullivan – 1996 – April 2017

And now for our third new columnist this month: Jennifer Pulling who wrote the book ‘The Great Sicilian Cat Rescue’ which I’ll review in next month’s update, has very kindly agreed to write a regular column detailing her experience of rescuing feral cats in Sicily.

THE GREAT SICILIAN CAT RESCUE:

It all began with Lizzie …

Here’s a question for you: have you found that ginger cats are more affectionate than other colour ‘schemes’?  All my ginger boys knew when I wasn’t well and would cluster around me.  Casey and Gibbs aren’t fussed either way.  Tell me about your cats taking care of you and being generally affectionate.

Have a wonderful Easter and please make sure that you do not give any chocolate to your pooches or pussies; chocolate has chemicals in it which are poisonous to cats and dogs.  Just give them extra cuddles and kisses instead!

And that just about wraps it up.  My apologies for the lateness of this Mewsletter.  Health and all other things permitting, the next update will be towards the end of this month and hopefully, we’ll get back on track.

Take care

Love

Casey – Nervously hoping there won’t be any ‘Mum-Messes’ to clear up

Gibbs – Whose found a sun puddle and is luxuriating in its warmth

Hi everyone and a very warm welcome to all the newbies that made their way through the catflap during the hottest June since 1976.

Happy birthday Canada – 150 years old on 1st July.  And happy 4th of July to all who celebrate it today.

Thank you to everyone who wished Lawrence and I better health.  Mine turned out not to be as serious as was first thought.  Lawrence had multiple stents put in the diseased areas of his heart (he has heart failure) and now – just a week or so later, already he is feeling a lot better. Casey and Gibbs were there, doing their bit: a raspy lick on the cheek, a paw placed gently on his thigh.  How could he not get better with such love coming his way?

I must apologise for the heading on the Scratching Post that went out earlier this month.  For some reason, I was unable to change the date so it went out with the date of the previous Scratching Post.  Not many people noticed and those that did were kind enough to point it out!

In the previous Mewsletter, there was an error or two in the piece about Deanna Chesnut’s book: Purrs and Promises.  I mentioned that her book was available in ebook, hardback and an over-sized paperback.  It is not available in hardback.  And I’m sorry that I put an unwanted ‘t’ in her surname.

FIGHTING THE FLAB THE FELINE WAY

We have had our first drop-out of the race to slim down feline and human.  Gabion took on the role vacated by Dumpty’s sudden demise a couple of months ago, but he has thrown in the towel.  His human has badly let herself down and he feels he’s done all he can possibly do.

Gabes throws in the towel

HOME PAGE MESSAGE:

Aoife McCann is an amazing artist and writer and she has written a few things about her cats: Pookie and Chalky for us.  She has a brilliant blog where she muses about life and the price of fish, and this month’s offer was Psalm 23 for Cats. Very funny.

Hi Everyone and a huge warm welcome and tummy tickle for all the new subscribers who joined us recently.  Well, after writing of the ‘heatwave’ that visited us in the UK for a few glorious weeks, we’re now in the early days of May, freezing cold, with the central heating back on!  And although parts of the UK are going to see the sun, down here in the South Eastern corner in Kent, our skies are filled with grey rain clouds, and Casey and Gibbs are clamped to the radiators!

Happy Mother’s Day to all those who will be celebrating it on 14th May.

I’m often sent cat books by authors and I’m always happy to read, review and promote them.  Due to the prohibitive cost of postage, I haven’t been able to read Purrs and Promises, written by Deanna Cheshunt from the US, but if you go to any Amazon website and look it up, it has got 5* reviews. Deanna has written about her conversion from cat hater, to cat mom, in Purrs and Promises.  Her cats led her to working with Bach Flower Remedies and other holistic treatments, and were even instrumental in her becoming an animal communicator.

Purrs and Promises is available on all Amazon website as an oversized paperback and an ebook.  If anyone has read it and would like to write a review for the Daily Mews, please contact me.

Did you know that here, at the offices of The Daily Mews, we are blessed with a wonderful team of writers, some of whom have had books published about their own cats?  This month, I’m highlighting Susanne Haywood’s beautifully written book: ‘Tigger: Memoirs of a Cosmopolitan Cat’.  If you haven’t already read this book you can get a signed copy from Susanne.  You can catch up with her on Twitter:

FIGHTING THE FLAB THE FELINE WAY:

Nearly all our Feline Flab Dodgers have expressed their frustration this time around at either trying to get their Human to lose the flab, or themselves.  Losing weight can be hard work and let’s face it, eating naughty stuff can be so much fun!!!  I hope you enjoy all their columns this month.

Hi everyone, and a huge warm welcome to all the newbies that joined us recently.  Sincere apologies for the tardy arrival of this Mewsletter.  Best laid plans of mice and men ….  Casey has written about one of the reasons why I was unable to update the website, which you’ll see mentioned further down.  The other reason and probably just as scary (to me, at least), was that I had to uninstall Microsoft Office and reinstall it and in the process, I lost all my emails.  Took me several hours and a sleepless night to work out how to find them again!  I am a complete numpty when it comes to technical stuff!

I want to thank Joyce Briscoe for her very kind donation.  I emailed Joyce but I believe it was her old email address.  Joyce, please email again so that I’ll have your new address – thank you very much – you are very kind.

September is Happy Cat Month.  I don’t know who thinks up these ridiculous titles because as cat lovers, EVERY month is a happy cat month, in my humble opinion!  So: in what ways do you make your cat feel happy?  And in what ways does your cat make YOU feel happy?  Write and let me know!

Here’s a situation for you:  Casey has some matts down each side of his flanks which he will not let me try and detangle them.  He doesn’t like being groomed at all.  The most he’ll let me do is use a baby’s brush which is soft, which I then stroke down his entire body. This does accumulate a lot of superficial fur but the main area which needs work, are these awful matts.  I bought a matt detangler (which sounds like the name of an Italian heart throb – ‘Titanic’ starring Matt de Tangla!) the other day, and armed with treats, I tried for a few seconds to make a start.  He wouldn’t have it.  The tail began swishing furiously and then he turned to warn me off with a nip.

He isn’t a long-haired cat.  He’s classed as a ‘Domestic shorthair’ but I know all cats benefit from some grooming.  It feels nice, and builds up the bond between cat and cat slave.  My question to you guys is: what can I do?  He isn’t neglected in any way, shape or form but these matts must hurt him or cause him discomfort.  Do you have any thoughts, ideas, or ingenious ways I could sort them out without the risk of losing fingers, a lot of blood and a day spent in A&E???

ON WITH THE MEWS:

BILBO’S BUZZ:

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Bilbo.  But he’s been busy doing this and that and looking after the house and his family.  Here’s the latest from him:

Fatal attraction or the flipside of love

BOOK QUIZ:

Well done to Jared Kline in Belgium for getting all five out of five correct for the last Book Quiz.  This has been limping along without much interest (apart from Jared’s, for which, I’m very grateful) for many months.  I’ve taken the decision – after a team meeting with my right-pawed assistants, Casey and Gibbs – that we will let the Book Quiz die a natural death.  Here are the answers to the last quiz:

Book Quiz July

CASEY’S CHATS:

I had a piece published in a cat magazine a while back and ‘won’ a cat toy for my troubles.  See what Casey makes of his new toy.

A new toy – erm, what am I supposed to do with it?

CHAV CAT’S CHOMPERS:

Chav cat lives with Gabion Tzchugge and retired ex-stud muffin, Lord Reggie, both of whom have their own section in the Mewsers’ Mewsings section.  Not to be outdone, Chav cat now has her own section.  In this first article, she realises that if she’s to snare Lord Reggie – the object of her desire – she’s got to clean up her act and slim down.

Wake up call

DIETING WITH DENVER:

Denver wrote his latest piece at the time of the General Election in the UK (back in June).  He’s been in the wars a bit as his article will tell you.

What’s this ‘ear then?

ED KOSTRO:

Moving to a new house is never easy at the best of times, but when you’re not only moving one spouse, a houseful of furniture and ‘stuff’, twelve cats and twelve dogs, (yes, really!!!) then the headaches begin.  Ed has written of his recent move to a new State, a journey which is a four-hour drive from his previous home.

The joys of relocating with lots of cats and dogs …

GABE’S GABBLINGS:

Gabion has been watching events unfold between Chav Cat and Reggie.

Another cat’s discomfort

GIBB’S GIGGLES:

I manged to get a photo of both Casey and Gibbs on my bed at the same time the other day.  This is an imagined conversation between the two of them.

It’s ours

HOME PAGE MESSAGE:

Casey has been very busy this month.  He’s also written the home page message.  ‘If walls could talk’ …

Just go to www.thedailymews.com and scroll down a little way – you’ll see it.

JENNIFER PULLING: SICILLIAN CAT RESCUE:

It is always hard, when you’re on holiday and you see cats and kittens that look unwell, skinny, uncared for and you know there isn’t much you can do.  Fortunately, Jennifer has built up a huge number of contacts in Sicily who will step in when tourists report sick cats to her.  Here’s the latest in her Sicilian Rescue diaries:

LINKS:

In light of the tragedy that Hurricane Harvey wrought upon Texas, Houston in particular, I was reminded, again, that pets are often left behind.  Do you remember Hurricane Katrina’s devastation 12 years ago?  I’ve been sent a link about the power of adopting pets, rather than buying a ‘designer’ kitty or canine friend.

The ultimate guide to pet adoption

Arlene in the US sent me this fabulous link to a very special little kitty.

Miracle Kitten Cassidy

Thanks to Britta, in the US, who sent me the link to a nice little montage of hens having fun.  I disagree with people putting clothes on animals – and a few individuals have put bloomers or pants on a couple of the chickens – but some of the other pictures are sweet.

Hens just want to have fun

We all know that birds are very intelligent – especially parrots.  Here’s a short video showing just how smart one particular parrot is and what he’s prepared to do to get his treat.

Mailo, the smart parrot

Robert Blau in the US sent me this link.  Would you like this as you went to the bathroom??

LORD REGGIE’S RUMINATIONS:

Reggie has been mulling over his life at Tom Cat Towers since he retired from active duty as a stud cat.

NAPPING ON A SUNBEAM:

The Daily Mews subscribers have, in the past, been blessed to have discounted items from The Cat Gallery in York, UK for some time now.  Peter and Alison have a beautiful cat themed shop where you can buy items for your cats or cat themed items for yourself or a friend.  So, it is with great sadness that I write that Ethel, their once RSPCS rescue cat, sadly had to be put to sleep a few days ago.  At 21 years of age, she was a firm favourite in the store with customers.  Peter has written a very moving tribute to her and there is a link within his tribute to a You Tube tribute which is lovely.

Ethel – 1996 - 2017

PIP OF PANAGIA:

Pip has bravely taken over Floot’s (the blue-eyed cat) column after her sudden death a couple of months ago.  A newcomer to the Wiles’ household, he’s just finding his paws and where he fits into the feline hierarchy.  He has a lot to say, and I’m sure he’ll become a firm favourite with Daily Mews readers.

Hi there!

And that wraps it up for another time.  Hopefully, illnesses permitting I will be with you at the end of this month.  If you have any stories about your own cats, do send them to me at the usual address.  Include good clear photos of them.

Take care and keep safe.

Love Pauline, Casey and Gibbs xxxxx
