She had many pet names and I used them depending on her mood for the day.  M & M, Emmie or Queen Emerald.  Mostly it was Emmie Kitty.

She was just another shelter cat, sitting in the glass front cage at the local Humane Society Rescue.  She was not even on the list I made from looking at their online site that day.

Somehow the others just didn't reach out and touch my heart, though they each were special.  It turns out that all the kitties on my list had already been adopted.

I was determined to get that special kitty to enter my life and help my service dog, Gypsy - a gentle and loving German Shepherd who was mourning the passing of her best friend.  She and my previous cat, T. S. Elliott, had been best buddies and Gypsy missed him.

Equally determined to help me find that special kitty was a shelter worker.  She convinced to me to go back just one more time to check out the kitties in the cages waiting for that forever home they so desperately needed.

And that is when I found her.  She was a small grey tiger tabby, 2-3 years old, no longer a kitten and had been a stray for a short time before she was rescued and brought to the shelter.  She looked like a Xerox copy of the first cat I had as a small child.

And so it was.  We met and she came home with Gypsy and I to her forever home.  For 13 years we shared laughs, love, sadness and life's many ups and downs.  Today she went home to the Rainbow Bridge to wait for me and others who shared their lives her.  For those of us who have lost that special fur person, their stay is much too short.

To someone else she may have been just another shelter kitty sitting in the cage that day.  To me and my Gypsy Rose who met Emmie at the Rainbow Bridge, she was a part of our lives and will always hold a place in our hearts.

A Cats Prayer

Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.
