Cooking for your Cat by Sophie Klein is the kind of book you wish you hadn’t seen because it plunges you into self-doubt about the same old boring cat food pouches you dish up day after day.

The beautiful cover of a mackerel tabby cat – not a whole lot different from my precious Casey <idea: could he carve out a career as a model for book covers?> reaching out with a paw to a plate of poultry nuggets in aspic (page 52) with a look of concentration on his face is just a joy.

The tagline is ‘Healthy Recipes – seasoned with affection’ and it’s true – the entire book is just oozing with delicious recipes that the feline with a discerning palate couldn’t help but be impressed by.

Sophie insists that all these recipes are made from LEFTOVERS of meals she cooks for her family and friends.  I don’t know what kind of meals she generally makes but my leftovers do not include prawns, crab or salmon!  Indeed, other than an occasional salmon fillet at which Casey does turn his nose up, prawns and crab do not usually enter the Daily Mews household – or stomachs.

This IS, however, a great book and each recipe has its own beautifully photographed page showing the end result and the book is split into sections:

·        For soup lovers

·        Hearty meals

·        Italian for tigers

·        The cat’s whiskers – fine dining for your cat

·        Kitty treats

There are some beautiful cats on display as well as some clever line drawings which do give the book some character.

The back cover has this blurb:

“Cooking for your cat:

Cats are the connoisseurs of the pet world.  If you want to treat your discerning feline friend to something a little different, this book provides a host of delicious, healthy dishes and nibbles containing fish, meat and vegetables.  The recipes are easy to follow, contain no artificial flavourings or colourings, and appeal to even the most demanding cats.  Cooked with love, these dishes are sure to win over even the most pampered pets!”

Be warned: if you feed your cat any of these recipes you may have a mutiny on your hands and the pouch may be sniffed at and some serious feline sulking may take place until his digestive demands are met!!!

Available in hardback from www.amazon.com, www.amazon.co.uk, www.barnesandnoble.com and a whole host of other outlets, the ISBN number is 978-1-4454-1594-9.  It would make a great stocking filler for any cat lover with a fine palate!

One Cat is Company

"One cat is company.
Two cats are a conspiracy.
Three cats is an attempted takeover.
Four or more cats is a complete coup!"
