New Beginnings

January is traditionally a month of new beginnings.  Many people make New Year’s Resolutions on January 1^st only to lapse by January 2^nd!  I know, I’ve been there.  But what about if it wasn’t so much a New Year’s Resolution you were embarking upon, but a new way of thinking? So instead of saying ‘I’m going to lose weight’, why not say ‘I’m going to live more healthily.’  Just changing our perception can often mean the difference between success and failure.

That’s the great thing about Casey and Gibbs and all felines in general.  They don’t stand on the scales on January 1^st, tut and shake their heads, or sob into a cappuccino after they’ve taken their measurements and written them down in the Book of Shame.  They are as they are – perfect.  Have you ever known a feline that wasn’t? Even those with disabilities are still perfect in my opinion – why wouldn’t they be? Perhaps it’s a disability they were born with, perhaps it’s the result of an accident – but all felines are a work of art.

And no matter if we’re plumpity (to quote from Jem Vanston’s wonderful book: A Cat Called Dog) or a bit on the lean side, we are as we are, too. Our cats often choose us; Casey and Gibbs both chose to live with me from wherever their original homes were.  So, if they’ve chosen me they must like me, and if they like me, they obviously don’t mind the bits of plumpity either! So why do I get so hung up on it?

Another thought as this month’s update is straddling two themes (New Year and Valentine’s Day) is that cats are more forgiving of us than we are of ourselves.  Perhaps we need to lighten up and be kinder to ourselves and love and respect ourselves more.
