Fat Cat and the Chocolate Sandwich by Nikki MaginnFat Cat and the Chocolate Sandwich is a book that will engage readers of all abilities.  Written by Nicki Maginn and illustrated by Sarah Rogers, it tells – in rhyme – the story of Fat Cat who likes to sit on his mat, eating chocolate sandwiches.  His friends try various means to get him to join in their games, but Fat Cat would rather stay where he is.  Or would he??

Nicki Maginn’s clever rhyme is a subtle way to let children know that while it’s okay to be different, sometimes being with your friends is just as nice and you can have good fun.  With the obesity crisis in the UK’s children, and their obsession with their electronic devices (iPads, Xbox, and the like) the UK’s children spend a staggering 2 days a week playing their games or chatting on social media.  Nicki thought by using ‘Fat Cat’ and his assortment of different friends, it might encourage children to put down their gadgets and go outside and play, getting valuable exercise instead.

Sarah Rogers’ illustrations are perfect to show non-readers, or early readers the story as it unfolds, and the rhymes are pitched simply so that any child can understand.

This would make an excellent present for Easter (instead of calorie-laden Easter egg!), or if you really can’t forgo the egg, read the book and be inspired by Fat Cat’s friends and the lengths they’ll go to in order to help their friend leave his mat and chocolate sandwich.

Published in paperback by Matador, priced £6.99, it’s available from all good bookstores and Amazon.

The Very Best Toy for Cats

"Of all the [cat] toys available, none is better designed than the owner himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to move in almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it makes a noise when you jump on it."
