SCALLYWAG

My Calli’s wearing
diamonds
though she’s not the least bit vain,
they glisten in her long thick fur
tiny sparkling drops of rain.
She’s brought her
muddy paws inside
and jumped up on my lap,
tattooed my clean white pants again
but knows her rump I’ll never rap.
Calli gets away
with murder,
in our house she knows she’s free
to rule the roost and call the shots
and invite her friends to tea.
Her coat is wet,
she needs to dry
so up the stairs she goes,
it’s not a towel she’s looking for
but my bedspread on which to doze.
Then she’s off
again into the rain
to paddle in the puddles,
she’s just a kitten child at heart
she’ll come back for her cuddles.
