ORLANDO'S ADVENTURES: VIII - DOWN THE OHIO by Jackie Brooks
They’re starting a new adventure travelling down the mighty river, and as they head off into the unknown with excitement our friends are a’quiver.
Following Swampy’s little convoy our friends paddle their own canoe, both wondering what is in store as they bid civilisation adieu.
Trailing one paw in the water Calli relaxes as they glide along, she admires the tranquil scenery and her heart sings a happy song.
Toward the end of their very first day they find an island and set up camp, after dinner they sit round the fire while Swampy spins yarns like a champ.
Next day from the opposite bank Orlando hears a spine-chilling howl, and it makes everyone nervous to know there’s a wolf on the prowl.
The canoes set off once again and the river is running fast, the water becomes choppy and wild, they have rapids ahead to get past.
The water swirls and eddies as it rushes past huge boulders, and the canoes toss about like corks causing tired, aching shoulders.
Calli clings on very tight in terror her eyes open wide, brave Orlando struggles to stay upright but poor Omar is flung over the side.
Beneath foaming water he sinks, then surfaces gasping for air, Orlando hauls him aboard by his tail trembling with shock from his scare.
Back into calm water they glide at last and look for a camp for the night. poor Omar needs time to recover from the shock of his watery fright. To be continued…..
