'Cats make one of the most satisfying sounds in the world: they purr ... A purring cat is a form of high praise, like a gold star on a test paper. It is reinforcement of something we would all like to believe about ourselves - that we are nice.' - Roger A Caras

"Of all the [cat] toys available, none is better designed than the owner himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to move in almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it makes a noise when you jump on it." -- Stephen Baker

    SYDDY

Hi everyone,

Syddy

My name is Syddy (really it's Hissing Syd - but all will be revealed later).

I am head of the household and as you can see I am a gorgeous ginger boy.   I was born on the 28th May 1999.  I have two brothers Tymmy and Mischief and a sister, Dympy.  Our mother was Whatsit (those regular readers may remember she was feature in this magazine a couple of years ago).

However, to get back to my story, we were born at our local vets as Whatsit could not give birth to us as Dympy (trust a girl!) was a breach birth and they thought she was dead, but luckily the vet revived her.

Once we were safely born and all at the vets had cooed over us we were allowed home.  Mummy had made a nice bed in the bathroom for Whatsit for her to give birth to us, so she put us there when we all returned.  As we were so lovely it wasn't long before mummy had friends begging to be allowed to see us.  At first she wouldn't let anyone come, but after a week gave in and let two friends round.   This was too much for Whatsit and when mummy wasn't looking she took us all away and hid us.  Mummy had no idea where we were and was fearful Whatsit had removed us outside, but no amount of searching revealed our whereabouts inside or out.

One day despite Whatsit telling us not to move whilst she was out, I was fed up and wanted to see what was out there.  My legs were very wobbly and my eyes just open so I crawled out just as mummy was coming past the room.   We were both very surprised to see each other and I did not know what this giant thing was, it was very scary, so I started hissing.   Every day I got bolder and kept peeping out and seeing this strange mummy person and each time I hissed, so she christened me Hissing Syd.  Gradually the others got brave too and came out.  Soon we were so brave and no longer frightened of mummy that Whatsit gave up on trying to hide us.  We had lots of fun chasing each other and running up and down stairs.   There were other older cats in the house, but they were frightened of us so that was alright.

I was a very greedy baby and liked to get all the milk, shoving my siblings out of the way.  Whatsit had a sister, Gizmo who had kittens a month later than us, so when Whatsit would not allow us to suckle any more I just shoved my way in with Gizmo and helped myself to her milky bar.   I grew into quite a fat little kitten. Mummy said I was very naughty but I know it made her laugh.

As we got bigger we had to go to the vets for an operation.  Mummy was all upset about leaving her "babies" but the vet said we would be fine.   Unfortunately there was a problem with my operation and it involved much more surgery than expected and I had to stay in the vets for the night.  Mummy was very glad when I could come home.

When I was 3 years old I got into a serious fight with another cat.  I had to defend the house being the "boss".   My eyes got hurt and I had to go to the vets where they removed my third eye lid.   I now have no protective lid like normal cats to pull over in case of danger.

Then when I was 8 I got bladder stones and I was very ill.   I had to stay in the vets for a week.  Mummy came to visit every day, but I did not like it at all and was very glad when at last I was allowed home.   Mummy keeps a very close eye on me now in case it happens again and any sign she whisks me off to the vets to have some medicine before things get complicated.

All in all I have a happy life.  I sometimes catch a mouse as they live under the shed in the garden, but most of the time I cannot be bothered to hunt.  I leave that to the youngsters, Twinkle and Socks, who are only 2.

I love to help mummy on the computer and know all the right keys to press (although mummy disagrees and says they are wrong!).   Sometimes I get jealous when she is on the computer too long and then I sit on the keyboard or I grab her hand.

At bed time I sleep on the pillow next to mummy, and if it is cold I snuggle under the duvet until I get too warm.

As it has not been a good summer my favourite past time has been sitting on the armchair in front of the window so I can see what is going on in the street.  I can growl at any passing birds if I feel like it.   For the last two months the Gas Board have been in the road replacing the pipes and that has been very interesting and has kept me awake nearly all day watching what the men are doing.  However, they are not here today, and after all this writing I am feeling rather sleepy.

Love

Syddy xxxx

A Cat's Prayer'

Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.

Let the sun shine where I lay,
Keep me young so I may play.
And most of all ...
Bless the people I adore,
And guard me from the dog next door.
