'Cats make one of the most satisfying sounds in the world: they purr ...
A purring cat is a form of high praise, like a gold star on a test paper. It
is reinforcement of something we would all like to believe about ourselves -
that we are nice.' - Roger A Caras
"Of all the [cat] toys available, none is better designed than the owner
himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to move in
almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it makes a noise
when you jump on it." -- Stephen Baker

MEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS
It’s January 1st 2008 and sleepily as I rolled out of bed I wondered if I was
going to change anything this year. Normally, I make a half-hearted attempt to
try to do ‘something’ better or harder but usually fall at the first hurdle,
normally right after breakfast. But a thought crossed my mind – what about
getting the cats to make some New Year’s Resolutions! How would they fare, I
wondered?

I
asked Billy if he could do one thing this year, what it might be. He thought for
a nano-second and said that he would try to sleep less during the day,
particularly during months with an ‘R’ in them ….
Timmy said that he wanted to take his ‘Nursing In The Suburbs’ (NITS) exams so
that he could perhaps be more mobile with his nursing abilities. Very
worthwhile, I thought.
Ollie prevaricated to such an extent that it was the 11th January
before I got an answer out of him. He said that he would respect ALL wildlife
and only bring in something now and then – and then only if it began with a ‘B’
or an ‘M’…
And
Sam, who always seems so cool, calm and collected just smiled that enigmatic
smile that he has and said that he would ‘love his neighbour as himself’ and pee
in my neighbour’s garden and not ours …
Invitations were sent throughout the world to the Very Important Felines without
whom the Daily Mews would cease to exist. They were asked if they would like to
contribute their thoughts on what they’d like to achieve for their New Year’s
Resolutions. Some feigned indifference and said it was beneath them to change
anything about themselves and please would I not contact them again. Fair
enough.
But
what did the others have to say for themselves? What follows are the thoughts of
Felines as dictated to their Devoted Servants and Slaves and Representatives but
as this goes to press, I wonder how many of these well-intentioned Resolutions
are already figments of an over-worked Feline Imagination and have fallen by the
wayside!
Read on to glean more of the inner workings of the Feline Psyche …

A Cat's Prayer'
Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.
Let the sun shine where I lay,
Keep me young so I may play.
And most of all ...
Bless the people I adore,
And guard me from the dog next door.

PRAISE FOR THE OCTOBER
2005 MEWSLETTER
Thank you very much for another wonderful Mewsletter. I look
forward to it each month, and this month was especially fine.
There is enough in it to be able to read at leisure over several
days, which sets it apart from many more compact sites, which
are finished in a few minutes. Your Mewsletter is more of a
digest, which I can go back to for something new over and over
again. I appreciate very much the work that you put into it,
and the contributions of all your feline staff. Thanks to
Ricky, I may even take up yoga.
All the best from rural Belgium, Jared Kline |
