'Cats make one of the most satisfying sounds in the world: they purr ... A purring cat is a form of high praise, like a gold star on a test paper. It is reinforcement of something we would all like to believe about ourselves - that we are nice.' - Roger A Caras

"Of all the [cat] toys available, none is better designed than the owner himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to move in almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it makes a noise when you jump on it." -- Stephen Baker

BUTTY

Butty

Hello Everyone,

My name is Butty and as you can see I am a lovely tortoiseshell.  I am a little girl and I was born on the 28th June 1999.  I have a brother, Flash.  I also had a brother, Jiffy, who sadly died a year ago in November (2010).  I also had a sister, Peanut, but when we were almost 3 she disappeared, and despite mummy putting up posters and asking all around, we never found her.  We think she might have found another home for herself as she was being harassed by our older cousins (a month older than us and boys!!).  We were all very sad when we could not find her.

We were all born under mummy's daughter, Carey's, bed.  Mummy and Carey were so excited when they found us.  We were quite brave and came out as soon as we could move around.  Carey said we looked like big fat slugs (that's not very nice is it?).  Our mummy just kept us well fed and soon we grew into beautiful playful kittens.  As I have said we had older cousins, so life was never dull and we all played together sometimes it was a bit manic, and of course we all quickly learned to climb the curtains.  That was a lot of fun, except sometimes I got stuck and would cry to be rescued.

When I was about six months old, my skin got very itchy and I started to bite at my fur and made by body bleed.   I was taken to the vet and they did lots of tests to find out what was going on.  It turned out that I have very sensitive skin and am allergic to house dust.  (Not that mummy's house is dirty. She drives us all mad keep vacuuming up when we drop fur all over the place).   I was given steroid tablets and I still have to have them today.

Unfortunately the tablets made me gain weight, and the vet kept saying I needed to lose weight.   Mummy tried everything, but nothing worked.  I did manage to lose 1kg.  In desperation mummy looked it up on the Internet as she thought she had read somewhere that taking steroids meant you would gain weight.  Sure enough, the Internet confirmed this and said it was impossible to lose weight.

The next time I was at the vets, mummy told them and my vet checked with the owner of the practice, who confirmed that it would be impossible for me to lose weight because of the steroid tablets.  He said I had done really well to lose 1kg.  I felt much better after this as I am not a greedy cat and in fact do not eat very much.  Mummy says I am just cuddly.

ButtyMostly I like to live upstairs in mummy's bedroom as it is quieter away from the sometimes noisy boys, and sometimes Syddy can be bossy, and that scares me as I am not a fearsome cat.  I have my food upstairs so I don't have to compete with the others for bowls and I have a litter tray, so it is up to me whether I go outside or not.  I prefer not to go out in winter as I do not like to get my paws wet.  If I do go out and it is wet then I walk on the kerbstones up the pathway in an attempt to keep my paws as dry as possible.   I quite often like to come down in the evenings when mummy is sitting down and I will lie alongside her.  This gets Syddy jealous sometimes and he will sit on top of me and pretend that he didn't realise I was there.

I have to go to the vets every six months for a check up.  I don't like this very much and I know when I hear mummy going to get the cat carrier that it might be for me, so I creep round and see where she is going.  If she is heading in my direction I try and run away without her seeing me, but she always gets me in the end.

A few years ago, we had a water leak in the house and the men who were doing the repairs said us cats were not allowed to remain in the house so we all had to go to a cattery.   We have never been away from home before.   I was clever I ran out of the house and garden and hid until mummy and Carey gave up looking for me.   When they came back I re-appeared.  I was lucky as I was allowed to stay in the house with mummy.    The others hated the cattery, and mummy brought them back after a day and a half as they were so upset and would not eat or anything.   I am so glad I did not end up having to go with them.  It was nice when there were no other cats in the house and I had mummy's undivided attention, but she does try to treat us all equally, and I don't think I have much to complain about really.

Well, folks, doing all this writing is quite tiring, so I think I might just have 40 winks.

Lots of love,

Butty xxxxxx
