‘I could pee on this and other poems by cats’ by Francesco Marciuliano is the perfect little book to pop into some one’s – preferably a cat lover’s – stocking for Christmas.  It is chock full of wonderful little poems written from a cat’s perspective and it sums up our feline friends absolutely.

Francesco’s clever poems are short and snappy – just a few lines long in some and a page long in others – but they hone in on what a cat is thinking, feeling, and doing exactly.

Grouped into four sections, the poems reflect ‘Family’, ‘Work’, ‘Play’, and ‘Existence’.  Each poem has a beautiful illustration of a cat on the facing page.

I could identify with nearly all the poems and one in particular, ‘I lick your nose’ reminded me of a trick that Garfield used to employ to wake me up.

The poem goes like this:

I lick your nose

I lick your nose again

I drag my claws down your eyelids

Oh, you’re up? Feed me

Garfield used to poke me in the eye and I’d have to pretend that I was still asleep.  Not to be outdone, he’d poke me in the other eye.  And then, for good measure, he’d hook my nose with his claws.  I’d get up, eyes watering and blinking while dabbing my bleeding nostrils with a tissue.  He’d dart down the stairs with Biggles, his brother, gloating ‘See, I told you my way was best!’
