'Cats make one of the most satisfying sounds in the world: they purr ...
A purring cat is a form of high praise, like a gold star on a test paper. It
is reinforcement of something we would all like to believe about ourselves -
that we are nice.' - Roger A Caras
"Of all the [cat] toys available, none is better designed than the owner
himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to move in
almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it makes a noise
when you jump on it." -- Stephen Baker

WHATSIT
My
name is Whatsit. I am a longhaired grey tabby. My mum and dad were feral, so I
was very nervous when I went to my new home in a nice warm house. Luckily I
had my sister Gizmo with me. We had lots of fun chasing each other and getting
to know our new cat friends who lived in the house. Our mum took us to this
vet place, but nothing bad happened and we went home again. (The vet told our
mum we were too small to be neutered).

I went out one day and met up
with a very nice black gentleman, who told me we would have fun and everything
would be fine. I was a bit scared afterwards and stayed indoors. A bit later I
felt funny and fat and my mum took me to the vet again, and he said I was having
kittens.
When I went into labour I was
very frightened but mum had a sixth sense that something was happening and told
everyone at work she had to go home. One of my babies was stuck and it was off
to the vets again, where I had four healthy babies. Syddy and Tymmy (ginger
boys), Mischief (black boy) and Dympy (black girl).

I tried to be a good mum and
hid my babies and looked after them as best I could, but I found it hard work.
My sister had four babies a month later. Mum kept all the babies. She said it
was not their fault they had been born and she had a duty to care for them. I
am now 7 and my babies are 6. I have very little to do with the boys but Dympy
and I do everything together and have glorious games skidding across the wooden
floors.
My mum keeps guinea pigs in
the garage and I often potter in to say hello. We also have a shed and a
family of mice live under the shed. In the summer I sit looking at the
underneath of the shed just in case a mouse comes out to play.
Once when I was helping mum
with the guinea pigs I swear I saw something in the garage move. I am convinced
the mice have moved into the garage for the winter. Mum says she cannot see
them, but I know they are there.
Every time I see mum going to
the garage, I rush out with her and bob up and down by the door until mum opens
it. I then rush to where I know they are hiding and sit concentrating until mum
drags me out. Sometimes I sneak back in when mum has switched the light off so
she doesn't know I am there. Then it gets cold and thankfully mum realises I am
missing and comes to get me.
This morning I went with mum
as usual, and then I hid when it was time to go in, so mum thought I had gone
out. Mum could not find me indoors and she thought it very unusual as I usually
help her get ready for work. Luckily she thought about the garage and opened
the door before leaving for work and out I popped. No doubt I will still rush
into the garage with mum tonight, as I cannot resist just waiting for those
lovely plump little bodies to come out. I never catch the little blighters
and end up tossing my toy mice around the house to make up for it. Mum says she
much prefers things that way!!
Love to all,
Whatsit xxx

A Cat's Prayer'
Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.
Let the sun shine where I lay,
Keep me young so I may play.
And most of all ...
Bless the people I adore,
And guard me from the dog next door.

PRAISE FOR THE OCTOBER
2005 MEWSLETTER
Thank you very much for another wonderful Mewsletter. I look
forward to it each month, and this month was especially fine.
There is enough in it to be able to read at leisure over several
days, which sets it apart from many more compact sites, which
are finished in a few minutes. Your Mewsletter is more of a
digest, which I can go back to for something new over and over
again. I appreciate very much the work that you put into it,
and the contributions of all your feline staff. Thanks to
Ricky, I may even take up yoga.
All the best from rural Belgium, Jared Kline |
