DEVON REX
The Devon Rex
appeared after the Cornish Rex, in
Devon,
(South west England),
when a stray was seen living in a disused tin mine with the unusual Rex coat. He
mated with another stray, one of whose kittens, another male, was born curly
coated. He was reared by a local resident and given the name Kirlee. It was
assumed at first that it was another occurrence of the same mutation as the
Cornish Rex, but mating Kirlee with Cornish Rex produced only normal coats. Only
inbreeding reproduced the curly fur: his coat was the result of a different
gene. So the Devon Rex was developed as a different breed. In Britain it was
recognised by the GCCF in 1967 but not in the United States until 1979.
The Devon Rex is a
slender cat with a hard, muscular body with a broad chest, carried high on slim
legs with small oval paws, the hind legs being somewhat longer than the
forelegs. The neck is slender, the tail long, fine and tapering. The head is
wedge shaped with full cheeks, a short muzzle, strong chin and whisker break.
There is a well defined stop and the forehead curves back to a flat skull.
Its large ears are
very wide at the base, set low and wide apart, tapering to rounded tops. The CFA
standard describes three distinct curves when the head is seen from the front:
the outer edge of the ears, the cheekbones and the whisker pads. The oval eyes
are large and wide set, sloping towards the outer edges of the ears and may be
any colour.
The coat is very
short, fine, wavy, curly and soft, can appear rippled and is slightly harsher to
the touch than the other Rex. Some guard hairs are acceptable and tufts and
muffs on the ears are acceptable. Whiskers and eyebrows should be crinkled,
rather coarse, and medium length.
Devon Rex are
friendly, extrovert and playful. They need a warm place to sleep and because
they have little hair they are attractive to those allergic to cat fur.
Colours:
All colours and
patterns are permissible in this breed.

2005 MEWSLETTER
Thank you very much for another wonderful Mewsletter. I look
forward to it each month, and this month was especially fine.
There is enough in it to be able to read at leisure over several
days, which sets it apart from many more compact sites, which
are finished in a few minutes. Your Mewsletter is more of a
digest, which I can go back to for something new over and over
again. I appreciate very much the work that you put into it,
and the contributions of all your feline staff. Thanks to
Ricky, I may even take up yoga.
