A morning kiss, a discreet

'Cats make one of the most satisfying sounds in the world: they purr ... A purring cat is a form of high praise, like a gold star on a test paper. It is reinforcement of something we would all like to believe about ourselves - that we are nice.' - Roger A Caras

"Of all the [cat] toys available, none is better designed than the owner himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to move in almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it makes a noise when you jump on it." -- Stephen Baker

WHY CATS SPRAY

by Pauline Dewberry

The latest in high technology now sits in pride of place in your living room – the ultimate HD ready 55” plasma screen television. Bought in time to watch the World Cup the entire family can – as one – enjoy this amazing experience and hopefully see England bring home the cup as they did in 1966!

However, one member of the family is less than enthralled with this new acquisition. He goes up to it and assumes the position. Staring straight ahead looking at a point on the far horizon, his rear end in front of the interloper, tail ramrod straight and with a slight quiver, he shoots, he scores – a direct hit on the new television. He walks off, satisfied. The interloper is now his property, part of his kingdom.

Cats grace us with their presence. It’s as if they’ve made a lifelong reservation at the Ritz Hotel. They accept their surroundings without comment or criticism. You may have a dubious taste in décor; you may have suspect floral carpeting throughout – a throwback to when you wore flares and sported a mullet – but your cat will overlook this fashion faux pas in a forgiving, non-judgemental way.

There is one criterion though – you cannot change anything. Cats hate change. So be warned. If you are setting up home make sure it is decorated to a high feline level of acceptance before actually acquiring your feline. Thus, you’ll avoid any unwelcome claims from the Mark of Marmalade, the Stamp of Sooty or the Paws of Pyewacket.

So why do cats spray over ‘our’ things? To understand that, you need to get down to cat level and view the world from their perspective, to see things as they see them.

In order to look at this complex issue more thoroughly, in the next part of this article, I will explain why cats mark what they perceive as their territory, and the different triggers which cause cats to spray. And I will give some solutions to ensure the cat and his humans can enjoy not only the World Cup, but life in general for ever more.
