MEWSLETTER 20: January 4, 2004
by Pauline Dewberry

HAPPY MEW YEAR one and all and a very
warm welcome to all the new
subscribers who are flooding through the
DAILYMEWS portals even as we speak!!!
Hope you all had a very happy Christmas
and saw the New Year in style including your feline friends in the celebrations.
Once again, the cats clustered around me on the sofa while the fireworks
exploded outside as the chimes of BIG BEN struck midnight.
I ventured out on Friday for the first
time since the Monday before New Year. I was in danger of the sofa becoming
welded to my rear end as I have spent so much time resting on it these past few
days. In fact, Christmas was very much a sitting down experience with the only
other activity being to lift a glass or
several of my favourite tipple (Baileys) to my eagerly waiting lips!!!
So Friday, I cautiously braved the drizzle
with an oversized umbrella that would have protected not only me, but also a
small island as well, and made my way to my favourite department store where I
purchased 10 new pairs of white knickers. Here in the UK we call
them `pants' but I know that in the
States, `pants' are what we here in the UK call `trousers'. It all gets terribly
confusing but I wanted to get that straight and from here on, I shall refer to
them as `pants' and everyone will, hopefully, realise, I am referring to
`knickers'!!!
Returning home on the bus pleased with my
purchase, I felt strangely comforted that I can now go forth throughout this New
Year armed and strengthened with the knowledge that my new pants will keep me on
the straight and narrow; that there won't be a hurdle insurmountable
because my new pants will get me to where
I want to be all in one piece. I can accomplish great things because I have new
pants! Everyone should get themselves new pants for the New Year!
Now on to the business at paw:
First of
all, let me humbly apologise for the link error with Ollie's Diaries. It was
Christmas Eve and I was rushing to get the articles posted, and the MEWSLETTER
written and sent out before I went away for Christmas. I was being collected
much earlier than I had originally been told and suddenly I had no time. So, it
was all done rather hurriedly and worst of all, I didn't check the link.
This month contains the correct link for
you to read Ollie's Diaries and I hope you'll enjoy them, nevertheless.
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/kittendiaries11.htm
Thank you to those who contacted me and
told me that the link didn't work.
While searching for some new cat clip art,
I chanced upon this really good website:
http://www.CalicoScootz.com and was further blessed when I found some
wonderfully warm fuzzy stories by Daniel Weiss. I'm happy to include two of his
shorter stories here, in the CAT CHAT section:
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/frankiebearandme.htm
and
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/toothpickandpaw.htm
We'll be seeing more of Dan's stories
about his two cats Frankie and Johnnie in the future.
I have two great funnies in the
A'MEWS'MENT ARCADE which I'm sure most of you will be able to relate to. Read
about a new twist on the old song '12 days of Christmas' here:
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/12daysofchristmas.htm
and the problems we encounter when trying to wrap presents with a cat about
trying to help:
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/wrappingpresentswithcat.htm
Having Garfield, who is going to be 18 in
March, prompted me to write an article about caring for an older cat and you can
read about this here:
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/careofanoldercat.htm
I will be covering other aspects about
looking after elderly pets in future issues and if there are any particular
subjects you'd like me to deal with, then please mail me in the usual way.
Let's make the year 2004 the year when
animal cruelty is wiped out, where empathy with animals is our main aim, and
where educating those who are ignorant of animals' rights is our prime concern.
To further this, I have created a new section: ANIMAL WELFARE where you can read
a fantastic article by Cherine Bissinger who has written about animal cruelty.
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/dailyreality.htm
And my friend Jim Willis has written a
heartrending poem, which you can read here but also, I have included the article
that Cherine refers to in her article, called `How Could You?'
http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/rescuersprayer.htm
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/howcouldyou.htm
Jim has an amazing ability and gift to
truly understand the thoughts of animals and to put himself inside their minds
to know what they are actually thinking. He conveys these thoughts to us and I'm
sure you'll be as moved as I was when I read both his contributions.
If you have any animal welfare issues
you'd like to write about, please do so at the usual submissions address.
John Richmond has sent a couple of poems,
echoing what all pets would hope for when they go to a new home, and you can
read these in the PURRFECT POETRY section:
http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/catsprayer.htm
http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/onlyhuman.htm
It seems that everyone is jumping on the
`diary-writing' bandwagon since Ollie put paw to keyboard, because we have
another diarist who has sent his activities for the past month. You have already
met `Storm', now you can read his diaries, and I'm sure we'll be hearing more
from the little guy in the near future.
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/stormsdiaries.htm
In case you missed the quiz from the
Christmas Eve MEWSLETTER, here it is again the answer will be given next time: What breed of cat likes swimming???
First one to send me an email
with the correct answer will get a mention
and if you have a website, you'll get a link.
All that is left for me now, is to wish
you all good reading of all the articles that have been added to the site. Don't
forget to keep your anecdotes coming for the CAT CHAT section. Wishing you all a
very happy and peaceful new year especially for the ANIMALS who deserve our
respect rather than our ill treatment.
Have a PURRFECT week until the next time
Your feline friend, Pauline and the
DailyMewsers
Garfield, Billy, Timmy, Ricky, Sam and
Ollie.
Don't forget - if you have AOL you'll need
to copy and paste the links into your browsers.

A Cat's Prayer'
Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.
Let the sun shine where I lay,
Keep me young so I may play.
And most of all ...
Bless the people I adore,
And guard me from the dog next door.

PRAISE FOR THE OCTOBER
2005 MEWSLETTER
Thank you very much for another wonderful Mewsletter. I look
forward to it each month, and this month was especially fine.
There is enough in it to be able to read at leisure over several
days, which sets it apart from many more compact sites, which
are finished in a few minutes. Your Mewsletter is more of a
digest, which I can go back to for something new over and over
again. I appreciate very much the work that you put into it,
and the contributions of all your feline staff. Thanks to
Ricky, I may even take up yoga.
All the best from rural Belgium, Jared Kline |
