MEWSLETTER 15: August 23, 2003
by Pauline Dewberry

Hi Everyone
Welcome to all the new subscribers who have joined us since our last MEWSLETTER.
Hope you're enjoying the long hot summer. Here in the UK
our weather temperatures have broken all records
since recordkeeping began – about 150 years ago. Those who live in hotter climes
are
familiar with temperatures in excess of
100 degrees, but here, we're wilting! Even the cats slump lethargically from
room to room, jostling for position on the coldness of the vinyl floor in the
kitchen or the wood laminate in the lounge.
A strange thing happened this week, as
Ollie will mention in his diaries. Coming out of the vet's surgery I found a
little box that had been left on the step. Inside, was a kitten with the
prettiest face and big blue eyes. Like Paddington Bear a note on the box gave
her personal details: name, age and circumstances that had put her into this
unfortunate situation and a request for a nice home.
I almost took her home but then common
sense prevailed. Garfield is not in the best of health and an 8-week old kitten
charging about the place is not a sensible thing to do to him, plus the cats are
still grieving for Charlie. It wouldn't be very kind to bring in a newcomer at
this transitional time.
I contacted a friend who decided she would
home her. Borrowing a little carrier from PetShopMan, back I went to the vets
and brought Rosie home. She is absolutely adorable and in the couple of hours
she spent at my house all my cats came to investigate her. Sam, who is the
biggest built of all the cats must have looked like a huge panther to Rosie and
although he didn't try and hurt her, she backed into the pattern of the sofa and
fluffed herself up to about 5 inches tall in her stockinged feet in order to
frighten him. She must have succeeded because he growled and left the room!
She is now settling into her new life with
four neutered toms and two doting besotted Humans and seems to be getting on ok.
I'll bring updates on her progress from time to time.
Speaking of Ollie, he continues to `Tom
Cruise' himself in through the open window at night – usually around 4.30 in the
morning to jump on my bed. He is always so pleased to see me that it probably
doesn't register with him that I'm less than pleased to be woken up at that
unearthly hour!
Well, we have tons of things for you to read this
time so where shall we start?
We have several new stories in the CAT
CHAT section; a heart-warming tale about Chip, who was stuck 60' up a tree for
almost a week before being rescued by a really nice guy who forfeited playing in
a baseball game.
http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/happyendings.htm
A fireman, who is mentioned in the story,
had a box of kittens dumped on him and as a result, one of the kittens has found
a new home with Chip and his family! Two happy endings for the price of one!!
Read how this owner fooled her cats into
thinking there were birds nearby just by mentioning the `b' word! Read it here:
http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/training.htm
Ollie has inspired another little cat
called Bailey to put paw to keyboard and she has written the first few chapters
of her new life:
http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/bailey.htm
And read about Bucko, a philanthropic cat
who goes about the neighbourhood doing good deeds:
http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/bucko.htm
Two new poems have been added to the
PURRFECT POETRY section. One, `The Cat and the Moon' by W.B. Yeats, was
submitted by Perrin Gurel and the other is a
particular favourite of mine, `A 14-year old convalescent cat in winter.'
http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/catandmoon.htm
http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/14yroldcat.htm
In the main articles section, Marjorie
Dorfman's hilarious account of exercising with her cat, Nero, is well worth a
read:
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/fitfatorjustacat.htm
Ollie has been busy again and you can read
about his exploits here:
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/kittendiaries7.htm
And finally, for all those indoor cats,
there is an article about kitty grass, which is dead easy to grow. You'll find
it here in the FELINE FITNESS section:
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/kittygrass.htm
I think you have enough to be going on
with so happy reading. Don't forget, those of you with AOL will have to copy and
paste the links into your browsers.
Until the next time, have a purrfect week
Pauline and all the DailyMewsers.

A Cat's Prayer'
Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.
Let the sun shine where I lay,
Keep me young so I may play.
And most of all ...
Bless the people I adore,
And guard me from the dog next door.

PRAISE FOR THE OCTOBER
2005 MEWSLETTER
Thank you very much for another wonderful Mewsletter. I look
forward to it each month, and this month was especially fine.
There is enough in it to be able to read at leisure over several
days, which sets it apart from many more compact sites, which
are finished in a few minutes. Your Mewsletter is more of a
digest, which I can go back to for something new over and over
again. I appreciate very much the work that you put into it,
and the contributions of all your feline staff. Thanks to
Ricky, I may even take up yoga.
All the best from rural Belgium, Jared Kline |
