MEWSLETTER 14:  July 29, 2003

by Pauline Dewberry

Ricky on his favourite chair

Hi Everyone

I would like to offer a very warm welcome to all the new subscribers who have joined us since the last MEWSLETTERS. I've had an absolute DELUGE of new subscribers this month – and it is lovely to have so many new `feline' friends.

I would like to thank all of you who wrote to me after Charlie's sudden death on Saturday 28th June. Most of you wrote to me, and it was overwhelming to know that so many of you cared enough to write.

For some of you, it triggered sad memories of your own recent, and not so recent, loss and by sharing your feelings that would help you in your grieving. So once again, many, many thanks to each and everyone who took the time and trouble to write to me. Your thoughts and comments were much appreciated.

Garfield continues to amaze both the Vet and I as he keeps his hold on life firmly between all paws. As he has arthritis he goes to the surgery on a regular basis to get an injection that helps to keep him mobile and the pain at bay. For 17 years old, he is doing very well and the Vet and I had a misty-eyed walk down memory lane last night when I took Garfield for his injection as the Vet remembered Garfield (and Biggles, his brother) when I first took them there at 8 weeks
old. They were both firm favourites with all the veterinary staff who would come out to the waiting room to whisk them off to be petted and cuddled by everyone behind the scenes.

Ollie is coming up to his first birthday in August although we don't know an exact date. Originally he was going to share my birthday (18th) but I decided he was so special that he needed his own special day just for himself – so he is going to celebrate his first birthday
on FRIDAY, 1st August. As he liked wearing Garfield's birthday hat so much, I might make him one to wear! You may see a photo in a future instalment of his diaries!

The next instalment of his diaries can be found here:
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/kittendiaries6.htm

Be sure to let me know what you think of them. I'm going to be sending what he has written so far so a publisher at the end of this week, so keep your paws crossed that they will be accepted – and successful.

In the main article section, I have finally introduced Ricky – who came to our house 5 years ago now. He is another ginger tom, an absolutely sweet-natured cat, who had been kept in a rabbit hutch for a year for some inexplicable reason. You can read about Ricky here:
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/introricky.htm

Since I wrote the article the other day, he has put himself on a diet and only eats 1½ breakfasts a day now. Actually, all the cats have lost their appetites since Charlie died. This could be in part due to the intense heat we've been having here in the UK, but I suspect it is more to do with them feeling at a loss as to where Charlie is and they are grieving.

Sam seems to be grieving the most – or in the most outward-showing way. He climbs on my lap at every opportunity wanting cuddles and will head butt me if I'm not paying attention. He makes these funny little crying noises that are not a usual part of his repartee of cat words so I know he is feeling sad. As with humans, the grieving process takes its time and cannot be hurried or sidetracked. It takes as long as it needs to take and we must just be as patient and sympathetic as possible.

The last addition is the new section – CAT CHAT. I did have 4 articles to go in here but have only been able to put one in for now.  I hope you'll enjoy this one, nevertheless, and the others will be posted next time. You can read about Alfie and Lilly here:
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/alfieandlilly.htm

I hope you all enjoy the new additions on the website and will let me have your own articles for the new CAT CHAT section, which is there for YOU to post anecdotes about your own feline friends. So get writing – anything up to 1,000 words (and don't worry if your written English isn't too hot – I'll sort it out!) and put your name and location so we can get an idea of where all our subscribers come from.

Don't forget those of you with AOL - you will have to copy and paste the links into your browser.

Until next time, take care and have a purrfect week.

Your feline friend
Pauline – and all the DailyMewsers

A Cat's Prayer'

Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.

Let the sun shine where I lay,
Keep me young so I may play.
And most of all ...
Bless the people I adore,
And guard me from the dog next door.

PRAISE FOR THE OCTOBER 2005 MEWSLETTER Thank you very much for another wonderful Mewsletter.  I look forward to it each month, and this month was especially fine.  There is enough in it to be able to read at leisure over several days, which sets it apart from many more compact sites, which are finished in a few minutes.  Your Mewsletter is more of a digest, which I can go back to for something new over and over again.  I appreciate very much the work that you put into it, and the contributions of all your feline staff.  Thanks to Ricky, I may even take up yoga.

All the best from rural Belgium, Jared Kline
