MEWSLETTER 11:
June 21, 2003
by Pauline Dewberry

Hi Everyone
Welcome to my new subscribers – I hope you continue to enjoy this website and if there is any particular topic that you would like to
see covered, please email me at the Mewsdesk and I'll do my best to post it soon.
Some news first: Garfield had a mild stroke two weeks ago and was put on medication that helps to get oxygen to the brain because he was confused. Poor thing, at 17, he is also senile but he isn't ill enough to be put to sleep (thank goodness!) 17, by the way, is equivalent to about 90 - 100 in human terms!!
He has completed a two-week course of the tablets and now we wait to see if he can cope on his own without them. In himself, he seems ok, but he is doing some strange things, which is part of his senility. Luckily, I am here all the time to keep an eye on him.
All the cats knew that something was wrong as they kept going up to him, to sniff him and kiss him. And they would look at me in a questioning way. I'm trying to stay calm so that they don't pick up my anxiety which would then cause further problems.
Ollie has written another instalment of his very popular diaries. You can read it here:
http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/kittendiaries5.htm
I haven't had chance to start the new CAT CHAT section this month, I'm afraid but all being well, it will be up and running next month. So you have a bit longer to get paws to keyboard and write those anecdotes about how your cats get on with your dog and any other feline anecdotes you would like to share with others.
On the book picks page I have added three books which deal with grief and grieving the loss of a beloved pet. So many people write to me expressing their pain at losing their pet, and how `non-feline' people don't understand their grief that I did a little search and found three books that I can personally recommend. You can see them at the bottom of the book picks page. Next month I hope to set them at the bottom of the Home Page but for now, they are just tucked in under the other book cover fronts.

Something that really annoyed and upset me very recently is the trade in cat and dog fur in Europe. While I was in Cyprus in January, I saw `toy' cats sleeping in baskets, and whilst they look cute, I didn't buy any. I'm so glad I didn't, because I have discovered to my disgust and horror they are made from real cat's fur. The American campaign group, The Humane Society International sent undercover investigators into Belgium where it discovered the shocking practice of Belgian furriers who claim that stray cats and dogs, and some lost pets, are routinely rounded up on the streets of Brussels and Ghent and killed for their fur.
To support the implementation of a ban in trading in cat and dog fur, please write to: DAVID BYRNE, The European Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, The Department of Health and Consumer Protection, The European Commission, Rue de la Loi 200, B1049 Brussels, Belgium.
Have your say and get this despicable practice banned.
June has been an incredibly hot month so far – with one or two awesome storms thrown in for good measure. Garfield spends a lot of time sunbathing in the garden, either in an old box or in the flowerbeds – or on my sun lounger. The warmth of the sun is doing a power of good to his arthritic bones. Ricky likes nothing more than lying under the Mexican orange plant or wedged in a plant trough, which seems made to measure for his shapely contours! Timmy likes to
lie as near to Garfield as possible and Sam often heads for the jasmine which is full of beautiful little pink sweet smelling flowers right now. Charlie, Billy and Ollie are not sun worshippers and spend most of the time indoors fast asleep in a variety of nooks and crannies.
Oh well, happy June to all of you. Don't forget to put some sun block on the tips of ears and noses of white cats to avoid the risk of getting a type of cancer called squamous cell carcinoma.

Take care, and have a purrfect week

A Cat's Prayer'
Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.
Let the sun shine where I lay,
Keep me young so I may play.
And most of all ...
Bless the people I adore,
And guard me from the dog next door.

PRAISE FOR THE OCTOBER
2005 MEWSLETTER
Thank you very much for another wonderful Mewsletter. I look
forward to it each month, and this month was especially fine.
There is enough in it to be able to read at leisure over several
days, which sets it apart from many more compact sites, which
are finished in a few minutes. Your Mewsletter is more of a
digest, which I can go back to for something new over and over
again. I appreciate very much the work that you put into it,
and the contributions of all your feline staff. Thanks to
Ricky, I may even take up yoga.
All the best from rural Belgium, Jared Kline |
