'Cats make one of the most satisfying sounds in the world: they purr ... A purring cat is a form of high praise, like a gold star on a test paper. It is reinforcement of something we would all like to believe about ourselves - that we are nice.' - Roger A Caras

"Of all the [cat] toys available, none is better designed than the owner himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to move in almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it makes a noise when you jump on it." -- Stephen Baker

The Day Kitty and the Loaf Went Separate Ways

by Philip Duckett, Centerburg, Ohio

Cats form the strangest friendships. Read about Kitty and his best friend, Bread!

When I had first moved in with my grandparents, my cat, Kitty, had some grave aversion to bread.  If we left bread anywhere that he could conceivably reach, it would be in shreds as soon as we left him to it.  Not just in shreds, but scattered through four different rooms.  Bread was the bane of his existence.

Well, eventually Kitty stopped hating bread so much and he and our loaves existed peacefully.  He would sniff them, perhaps paw at them, but he didn't kill them.  One day, however, Kitty's bread obsession took a new and extremely odd turn.

So, there I was, I had just got home from school, and was sitting at my computer surfing the web.  I heard this really odd *pshhhht* *pshhhht* sound, but every time I stopped to listen to it, it stopped.  I figured it’s my imagination and kept on surfing.  About 2 minutes goes by, and by then I was sure I was hearing it.  I turned around to see Kitty, a long, skinny, tomcat, pulling a full loaf of wheat bread into my room (about 80' from where the bread was sat in the kitchen) with great effort.

Needless to say, I was rather shocked.  I just sat there and watched him.  He pulled it into the doorway, turned around and looked me in the eyes, let out a meow, twitched his tail in an affectionate manner, then resumed the dragging of the bread.  He pulled it into the centre of my closet where he then proceeded to try to fluff the bread like a pillow.  After he was sure that the bread had reached peak fluffing conditions, he sat on top of it and grinned, proud of himself for accomplishing this feat.

I scratched my head and said, "what is wrong with you, cat?" to which he replied with a thorough licking of his crotch atop the fluffed bread in the middle of my closet.  I let him sit there for a little while since he had fluffed the brand new loaf of bread past all hope of salvation anyway and just went about my business shaking my head.

He was curiously sad when I took the bread from him, and he cried about it.  I couldn't very well let bread sit around and mould in my closet though, could I?  After that, he never touched bread again.  I'm not sure if he was heart broken, or if he decided that the bread-cat relationship was too high maintenance or what, but to this day there has not been another bread incident.
