HOW I CAME TO TOM CAT TOWERS by Little Dumpty Roo I
had a bit of a sad start to life. I am a Himalayan Lynx and I lived with my
brother and a human who I loved. Sadly both of them died and at 6 years of age On 22 July 2007 I was hiding as usual, when there was a knock at the door. I heard voices and snuggled tighter into my hiding place. After a while the hand that fed me pulled me from my hiding place and carried into the room where two other humans sat. They were Carol and John. They had come to see me with a view to rehoming me. What I didn’t know at the time was how they came to be there … On 22 July 2006, exactly one year previously, they had lost Oliver Zinfandal a Persian with a magnificent moustache, even better than mine, to flystrike. Oliver was a grumpy, nasty bad tempered Persian cat they had rehomed aged 10. He had hissed, cussed, spat and savagely bitten his humans for 8 years before he died. But he was a very much loved cat, despite his nasty nature. Oliver was famous. He had starred in both series of BBC Television’s ‘Barking Mad’ as Britain’s grumpiest cat. It wasn’t only his humans that Oliver mercilessly attacked, but also his two brothers; Willi Whizkas a Maine Coon and Tushtots a Tabby Persian. I didn’t realise they were also very famous cats. John didn’t want another cat, but Carol’s heart broke when she heard of a poor ‘Persian’ cat whose picture had been posted in a vet’s waiting room that hadn’t had any interest. She called my owner and fell in love over the phone with the sound of me. But John was adamant. He did not want me. He didn’t even want to come and see me, even if it meant I would have to be put down. Wills and Tusher later told me they had some real shouting matches about me! It was only when divorce was threatened that he agreed reluctantly to come and have a look but with no intention of having me! I was carried into the room. When I turned round that was it. Carol and John just fell instantly in love with my sad face and incredible blue eyes. There was no way they were leaving without me!! I must admit I liked the look of them too! After I had wriggled free and raced behind a sofa in fright, I was gently pulled out and Carol gave me our first hug. I gazed in terror at her, rigid with fear and desperate to run away to snuggle into a hidey hole. I was a thin little thing with knots in my fur but it felt so nice being tenderly stroked and told how beautiful I was even if I was being a wriggly worm! It was agreed that they would have me. I had a collar with glittery bits put on my neck with a disc with my new name on it; Little Dumpty Roo. Carol knew she was going to have me!! I was called Dumpty after Carol’s Dad who also had blue eyes like mine. I was packed into my travel basket and we went off to start my new life at Tom Cat Towers. When I arrived, my basket was opened on Carol’s bed. To my horror, another cat, Tushtots, got into the cage. Thankfully, he wasn’t aggressive; he just wanted to give me a reassuring lick between the ears to welcome me to my new home. I cautiously stepped out onto the bed where Willi Whizkas was sitting. He gave me a bit of a sniff then disappeared. I spent the first three days hiding under a Welsh dresser; I was being a bit of a diva! I could not be tempted to eat. When I eventually did, my sensitive tummy would react quite badly to some cat food. Carol took me to the vet where they found that two of my molars had rotted, painfully exposing nerves, which explained the lack of appetite. After they had removed them I discovered my appetite. I just love Joe and Jill’s kibbles. I cannot keep my nose out of them!! Now I’ve got something I didn’t arrive with; a podgy tummy and a glossy coat which suits me! One morning not long after I arrived, Carol woke up to find the lounge carpet covered in fur. She thought the other two cats had dismantled me!! I was allergic to a change in washing powder and all my tummy fur fell out. We’re back on Surf and my fur is almost grown back. I did say I had a sensitive tummy! I discovered that I love being groomed. John bought a new nylon toilet brush with a long handle so he can reach me with the brush without bending down from his seat whilst I lie on my back on the carpet having my tummy brushed. John is a great big adventure playground, who produces catnip mice, feathers and fluffy things for me to play with. I just have to sit in front of him and stare hard to activate him. Then he’ll play with me for hours. He’s fabulous fun!! At night I snuggle up to Carol on her pillow and purr. If I roll over and stare into her eyes she strokes me until we fall asleep again. Tushtots sometimes joins us too for a purr! Tushtots is a very chopsy-cat. He never stops meowing, purring or chirruping. I can go days without letting out one of my little delicate cute ‘mews’. It’s taken me a bit of time to settle down. New humans coming into the house cause me to freak out then I run and hide. But I’m getting better, more confident. I don’t do ‘outside’ yet. It looks too scary and I don’t want to get my fur dirty as I’m a bit of a pampered princess-puss now. However, I’m getting used to wearing a halter for the big day when I do go out with one of my humans. I do like to sit by the window and watch the blackbirds for hours. Carol puts raisins out just the other side of the glass so that the birds come quite close to the glass for me to chirrup at them. I’m so glad I came to Tom Cat Towers. I’m just adored by Carol and John. In fact they are obsessed with me almost as if they have had a new baby in the house. Wills and Tushie are great brothers. They never hissed, growled or raised a paw to me when I came here. No jealous fits at all considering the size of them. I’m just a delicate little girl-cat and they let me wander over and sniff them. I do flaunt myself at Wills just for devilment, but he just gets embarrassed and runs away. Tushie and I are mischief-monkeys together. We stampede round the house like mad things, jumping on and off beds and scampering across the carpets in the early hours making a heck of a row till we get shouted at. I never knew being naughty could be so much fun! But best of all, are the rare moments when Carol cuddles me and tickles my moustache and I manage to purr because I feel so happy and secure. Of all the cats in all the world I really am the most luckiest to be a Turner Tom (albeit an honorary Tom as I’m a girl!) here at Tom Cat Towers
