Because his long white

I began every day laughing.

'Cats make one of the most satisfying sounds in the world: they purr
... A purring cat is a form of high praise, like a gold star on a test
paper. It is reinforcement of something we would all like to believe
about ourselves - that we are nice.' - Roger A Caras
"Of all the [cat] toys available, none is better designed than the
owner himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to
move in almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it
makes a noise when you jump on it." -- Stephen Baker

NEW BEGINNINGS
It
was Christmas Eve and Catherine blew her nose as quietly as she could. She
didn’t want to draw attention to herself and be thought of as weak, or that she
couldn’t hack it. She was sitting with her back against a puny tree trunk in a
small village in Namibia. The setting sun was sinking low in the sky – a huge
giant golden orb casting orange shadows and highlighting the stark tree lines
which were dotted here and there. She’d been told that she hadn’t seen a sunset
until she’d seen an African sunset – and they were right. They were absolutely
sensational but right now, at this moment in time, the beauty of the setting sun
was lost on her.
She’d come to this village as a nurse to help care for the orphans living with
HIV/AIDS a couple of weeks ago. The children were as young as a few months up to
18 years of age and apart from being given medicine to help with their
treatment, they were taught in a one-roomed school house every day and the older
ones were given a small patch of land to tend to help them become
self-sufficient. All the children had lost parents to the disease and many had
lost siblings as well.
It
was a daunting task, and Catherine, not one to shy away from a challenge, had
felt the call to do something, to make a difference in a culture not her own.
But somehow she felt, as she sat against the tree, that she wasn’t making any
impact at all. It had been hard to integrate as being the new person to join the
group, friendships had been made and she still felt like an outsider. And as
hard as she tried to make friends with the children they seemed not to like her,
or trust her. She just felt out of her depth and wondered at her sense in coming
to a country thousands of miles from the comfort of her shabby old semi in
Croydon.
Fat
tears coursed down her cheeks and she closed her eyes, giving herself up to a
good cry and ignoring the beauty of the sunset. She hadn’t noticed little 5 year
old Nathan sitting just behind her watching her. Now he came silently over to
where she was sitting, and just as quietly he sat down beside her, slipping his
tiny hand into hers. She opened her eyes and looked to her right where he was
seated. He smiled at her, a big gap-toothed smile that most 5 year olds have.
‘It’s okay missus,’ he said, ’tears are God’s way to clear out the old bad stuff
and make room for the new good stuff.’ Catherine smiled a watery smile at him.
Maybe he was right. Maybe there was some new good stuff just around the corner.

A
Cat's Prayer'
Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.
Let the sun shine where I lay,
Keep me young so I may play.
And most of all ...
Bless the people I adore,
And guard me from the dog next door.
