'Cats make one of the most satisfying sounds in the world: they purr
... A purring cat is a form of high praise, like a gold star on a test
paper. It is reinforcement of something we would all like to believe
about ourselves - that we are nice.' - Roger A Caras
"Of all the [cat] toys available, none is better designed than the
owner himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to
move in almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it
makes a noise when you jump on it." -- Stephen Baker

A LESSON LEARNED
Mary sat down with an exhausted thump on the old careworn wooden bench in the
park. It was situated by a group of formidable oak and beech trees which formed
a semi-circle of care around her. She took out her notebook and wrote ‘To Dad’
at the top of a page and then sat there, wondering what to write next.
She
was startled to hear the sound of sobbing coming from somewhere nearby and
getting up from her seat, walked around a couple of the trees until she found
the source. A small, grubby little girl was curled up against the trunk of an
oak tree sobbing for all her worth. Clearing her throat, Mary asked the little
girl what was wrong.
The
little girl was equally startled to see Mary and at first she tried to shrink to
make herself even smaller. Mary backed away from her a few paces so that she
wouldn’t feel threatened. ‘It’s all right,’ Mary said, ‘I won’t hurt you. Is
something wrong?’
The
little girl hiccoughed and blew her nose noisily into her sodden tissue. ‘It’s
me Dad,’ she offered. ‘’E’s gone and died and me mam doesn’t know where the next
penny is coming from. She called ‘im a selfish something or other – I don’t know
the word and she’d brain me if she ‘eard me sayin’ it.’
Mary smiled gently. ‘My father has just died as well,’ she told the little girl.
‘Seems like a bad time if you’re a dad, doesn’t it?’
The
little girl smiled hesitantly back at her. ‘Yes,’ she almost laughed but thought
better of it. ‘What did your Dad die of then?’ she asked Mary.
‘He
had a heart attack and it was over very quickly,’ Mary answered thinking about
the dreadful moment when the consultant shook his head sadly, indicating there
was nothing more that could be done. ‘What about your Dad?’
‘Me
Dad died of allergies,’ the little girl replied. ‘He was allergic to work,
allergic to the cat, allergic to me Mam. And now she’s got to put the gin away
me Gamma said and bring us kids up right before we all get allergic as well.
‘E
always said ‘e would leave ‘er to teach ‘er a lesson but I don’t think ‘e meant
like this though.’

A
Cat's Prayer'
Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.
Let the sun shine where I lay,
Keep me young so I may play.
And most of all ...
Bless the people I adore,
And guard me from the dog next door.
