'Cats make one of the most satisfying sounds in the world: they purr
... A purring cat is a form of high praise, like a gold star on a test
paper. It is reinforcement of something we would all like to believe
about ourselves - that we are nice.' - Roger A Caras
"Of all the [cat] toys available, none is better designed than the
owner himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to
move in almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it
makes a noise when you jump on it." -- Stephen Baker

SONIC 1991 - 2010
What
can I say about Sonic (full name Super Sonic Dreadnaught)? Feisty Lady, Black
Panther and bane of all other cats’ lives spring to mind.
In
her youth she would not have looked out of place on a T.V. ad or on the cover of
a box of chocolates with her perfectly formed little face and luxurious long
black fur.
She
disliked all other cats, although when she was a kitten she didn't mind the
resident cats until she reached the age of 10 when there was an influx of
kittens in the house. They were not worried by her screaming abuse at them and
chasing them (in fact they thought it great fun). At this point she went to
live with my daughter, Carey, and enjoyed being queen of all she surveyed and
quite the only cat. Woe betide any of the neighbouring cats who strayed into
her garden. Even as age overtook her she could still put on a lightning turn of
speed when her garden was invaded.
Sadly
as time passed she started to suffer with dementia and would constantly scream
day and night if she could not see Carey. It ended up with the poor girl not
getting any sleep as Sonic having got up in the night kept getting lost. It was
decided that Sonic would return to me and see how she fared back here as Carey
was moving to live with her boyfriend and he was not keen on having an aged
smelly cat around.
I
did have my doubts about uprooting the old girl, but she took her return here
like a duck to water. She took over my bedroom and became a whirling dervish at
any cat that dared enter her chamber. Both Carey and I were delighted at the
success of the move, and me even more so as she stopped screaming. Possibly
this was because she did not go beyond my bedroom door (although of course she
was free to wander at will), and it was only a couple of days before her death
that she started to emerge from the bedroom and go into other rooms.
One
evening I could not find her, panic set in as to where she could be. I was
amazed when I opened the door and she was outside. Could it be that she knew
her time was up and had decided that she wanted to visit her old haunts for the
last time.
She
slipped away from this life at 3.30 a.m. on the 26th October 2010. I was with
her to the last and it was so hard to see her go. She fought hard to keep
living, but sadly her body gave up in the end.
Goodbye old girl, we will never stop loving you and we will all be together
again one day. Sleep tight.
