A morning kiss, a discreet
touch of his nose landing

Because his long white
whiskers tickled,
I began every day laughing.

'Cats make one of the most satisfying sounds in the world: they purr
... A purring cat is a form of high praise, like a gold star on a test
paper. It is reinforcement of something we would all like to believe
about ourselves - that we are nice.' - Roger A Caras
"Of all the [cat] toys available, none is better designed than the
owner himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to
move in almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it
makes a noise when you jump on it." -- Stephen Baker
Garfield: 28.03.86 - 12.06.06

TRIBUTE TO GARFIELD
by Jill Carpenter (US)

He had a face full
of whiskers, four soft dainty paws
(conveniently equipped with
retractable claws),
a motoring purr, two gold gleaming
eyes
(the better to watch as the
hummingbirds fly),
a nose that smells dinner (from
three rooms away!)
the heart of a winner, that
triumphs each day
with sweet loving humour, and
patience, no end.
What more could one wish of an old
loyal friend?
This was written for
Pauline
and
Garfield.
It's
times like these that I wish I really were a writer...as opposed to one who
merely types words on a page...and deletes...and types...and deletes...and
types...and never quite gets it right. No matter how I tried to put them
together, and re-arrange, and add and subtract them, polish and shine them,
words seem like terribly inadequate things to offer as comfort to a grieving
friend.
If I
could, I would rather grab a plane and fly across the ocean to visit Pauline,
maybe bring her a pot of tea and some fresh baked cookies and a bouquet of
flowers, and sit with her to chat a while.
Maybe
she would take me on a tour of her garden, and I could laugh at the silly antics
of the dog that lives next door (who would surely bark at me), and be introduced
to her entire family of cats.
I
would enjoy hearing stories of Garfield, who was very special to Pauline and the
cats who share her home. There is no question that he is sorely missed.
And
maybe at the end of the day, after the sun had set and the stars began twinkling
around the moon, if we looked up from the garden and waited quietly, we might
just see a smiling cat with sparkling stars in his whiskers...
...and a motoring purr, a wink in his eye
(the
better to watch as the angels fly by)
a nose
that smells dinner (from three stars away!)
the
heart of a winner that triumphs each day
with
sweet loving humour and patience, no end...
...how
better to remember a dear loyal friend?

A
Cat's Prayer'
Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.
Let the sun shine where I lay,
Keep me young so I may play.
And most of all ...
Bless the people I adore,
And guard me from the dog next door.
