'Cats make one of the most satisfying sounds in the world: they purr ... A purring cat is a form of high praise, like a gold star on a test paper. It is reinforcement of something we would all like to believe about ourselves - that we are nice.' - Roger A Caras

"Of all the [cat] toys available, none is better designed than the owner himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to move in almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it makes a noise when you jump on it." -- Stephen Baker

MEWSLETTER 71 SEPTEMBER 30 2009

Hi there everyone and an incredibly head-butting purring rumbling tum type of welcome to all our new subscribers who inched carefully through the magnetic cat-flap of the Daily Mews Mansion since the last Mewsletter. You are most welcome to share the contents of this Mewsletter with your feline loving family members and friends.

WORLD ANIMAL DAY

What is it? My great friend Jim Willis, a devoted animal advocate, is the WAD Ambassador in the USA. For complete information about World Animal Day and resources please click the link below:

http://www.worldanimalday.org.uk

Jim wrote this in an email to me: ‘World Animal Day was started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. Since then it has grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and is widely celebrated in countries throughout the world. October 4 was chosen as World Animal Day as it is the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

It is intended as a day of celebration for anyone in the world who cares about animals. It is not restricted to any one nationality, creed, religion, political belief or ideology.

If you haven't already decided how you’re going to celebrate World Animal Day this year, don't delay any longer. Even if you don’t have a lot of spare time, we've got plenty of fundraising/educational ideas that take little time to organize and, if you enlist plenty of help the sky’s the limit! See "Get Involved" on the WAD site.

Visit the "Events Diary 2009" to read listings of all the fabulous events that have been registered so far in celebration of World Animal Day, October 4.

Please help us spread the word about World Animal Day by including information in a newsletter or action alert, sending your personal message to your address book, forwarding this message, and/or by creating a website link.  Full instructions for a number of different styles of weblink are available in the "Resources" section of the website where you will also find the World Animal Day logo in various formats.

The animals mean the world to all of us. Let us celebrate them around the world on this special day. Thank you for your participation.

Let me know what you do for WAD and I’ll report in a future Mewsletter.

I was fortunate enough to be able to interview the UK ambassador for WAD – Ryan Mears. Click on the link below to read the article:

AUGUST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS: HUMAN AND FELINE

Many thank to everyone who sent me birthday cards or e-greeting cards (emails) in August. I had a great birthday. Ollie was 7 on 1st August and Billy was 13 on 6th August.

SHORT STORY/POETRY COMPETITION results:

I’m really thrilled to announce the winners of the short story and poetry competition which ran in August.

Click on the link for details: http://www.thedailymews.com/KittyBits/short_story_comp1_results.htm

Jamaka Petzak (US) wrote a wonderful short story which was a deserving winner and Carole Hershman’s poignant poem was a very moving tribute to her cat Rua.

The next short story and poetry competition will be aired in time for Christmas so you have a bit longer to submit something. The theme will be Christmas and what it means to your cat – it can be fact or fictitious – you decide. Guidelines can be found here:

http://www.thedailymews.com/KittyBits/short_story_competition2.htm

Jamaka also gave me a link to a good website which does cat (and dog) collars; check it out here:

http://www.patternandpaw.com/

She’s a busy lady is our Jamaka – she gave me this information which might be of interest:

Whiskers Rescue is a TNR/Rescue/Adoption out of Sayreville, New Jersey (on the east coast) and they operate a huge store on eBay selling wonderful jewellery, T-shirts, handmade quilts, and other items.  All of the proceeds go to TNR and cat rescue.  You can read about some of their projects and successes by going to http://www.whiskersrescue.org and you can link to their eBay store from their site.  With holiday gift giving coming up for many people, I hope everyone who can, will shop Whiskers Rescue.  I can personally testify to their excellent quality, quick shipping, and friendly professionalism, having ordered several items from them.  They also gratefully accept donations of jewellery or other saleable items for inclusion on their store site.’

Jade Murphy contacted me regarding the Heart and Sole Dog Walk being held in Greenwood, South Carolina, on October 24th? Just click here: http://www.firstgiving.com/jademurphy

Thank you!

‘You're alive. Do something.

The directive in life, the moral imperative. . . so uncomplicated.

It can be expressed in single words, not complete sentences, like this:

Look. Listen. Choose. Act.’

Although Jade lives in Alaska now, she still supports the South Carolina Humane Society – see this link:

http://www.gwdhumanesociety.org

They are in need of all types of cat and kitten food – preferably the dry food – but all food will be gratefully accepted.

ART SHOW:

Laura and Gary Dumm are having an art show on October 9th.  Click on the link below and see if you can get to their show. Tell them you’re from the Daily Mews!

http://artscollinwood.org

Check it out and go and see both their art – they are an incredibly talented couple! I bet all their cats can paint or draw as well!!!!

The winner of CAPTION COMPETITION 7 is Barbara Moss (US) – well done, Barbara. A prize is on its way to you for your winning caption which was:

ARTICLES:

Lynn Schiffhorst has written a new series called ‘Sergeant Pinky on Patrol’ and her first story: ‘The Cats of Manhattan Story’ introduces the reader to Sergeant Pinky, her daughter, Rocky, and Matilda – another pretty little female. If you missed the first episode, you can read it here:

http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/sergeant_pinky_on_patrol.htm

Here’s the second episode:

http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/sergeant_pinky_on_patrol2.htm

So you’ve brought home a kitten or two; now what are you going to call them? It’s important to give your cat a dignified name as befitting the noble status of the superior cat.

CAT CHAT

What happens when the cat you’ve shared your life with develops a life-threatening illness? You give it as much love and treatment as humanly possible. Bruce (US) writes with love and compassion about his cat Ashleigh:

http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/Ashleigh.htm

My thanks to Kathy (US) who sent me this beautiful story: Another Door Opens by Marty McGovern. Although I am (and always will be) primarily a CAT PERSON I DO like dogs and this story is just achingly poignant.

http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/another_door_opens.htm

How Squeeky got her name by Vic Reskovic is a cute story about a cat telling her People by what name she wished to be called:

MEWSERS’ MEWSINGS

Jimmy’s latest piece will have you nodding with agreement:

http://www.thedailymews.com/mewsersmewsings/changes_ahead.htm

Following on from Muffin’s story last time, another one of her feline brothers has written to introduce himself. Syddy, looking very much like a young – and gorgeously handsome Garfield and Timmy lookalike – tells us about his life:

NAPPING ON A SUNBEAM

It’s always a sad day when I receive emails from people telling me that their beloved feline or canine companion has passed away. If you would like to have a tribute to your pet, write to me and I’ll include it next time.

Kuhl: http://www.thedailymews.com/NAPPINGONASUNBEAM/Kuhl_onyx.htm

Dandy Lion: http://www.thedailymews.com/NAPPINGONASUNBEAM/DandyLion.htm

Beezer, the Black Lab, wrote a lovely 10 point list on guilt from the Bridge for his Dad, Doug Koktavy, in order to help him deal with his feelings of guilt. I’m sure many of us who have had to make that final decision to help our pets on their onward journey can identify with what Beezer so carefully written.

http://www.thedailymews.com/NAPPINGONASUNBEAM/on_guilt.htm

Doug has a book due out in October about Beezer and Boomer and at the end of the article there is an email address to contact him.

Several people have sent me links to the Simon’s Cat videos. They are hilarious and never fail to make me laugh out loud. Here’s a link, sent by Judith in Canada of all of the videos, with a good link at the end about a fat dog which is a timely reminder about overfeeding our pets. Be sure to watch the first one which is about a fly!

AND FINALLY …..

I had some good news yesterday when I went to the hospital in London. All my blood work looks really ‘healthy’ (apart from a virus that continues to cause alarm from time to time) but the good news is that my brother’s stem cells have finally reached 100%. There is now a less than 1% chance of the leukaemia returning. Thank you to everyone who has been with me throughout this journey over the last 3 years; for your prayers, letters, cards and emails of support; gifts and phone calls. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who cared – thank you all very much. God bless each and every one of you.

I celebrate my 1,000th day on October 22nd – that’s 1,000 days since the transplant – it seems incredible and hardly believable that I actually experienced all this!

Well that about wraps it up this time. I look forward to hearing all your news, feedback and comments and for your competition entries.

Take care, and all good wishes

Pauline,

Billy, Sam and Ollie
