MEWSLETTER 72 NOVEMBER 3 2009
Hi Everyone, and a tummy-tickling welcome to all the new subscribers who hurtled through the catflap since the last issue was sent out. You are very welcome and if you have any feline loving family members and friends, please give them a copy of this Mewsletter. Better yet, get them to subscribe! It’s free!
Before I get on with the Mews, can I share some good news of my own with you? Some of you know that I was diagnosed with leukaemia in June 2006; well, in October (this past month) I was told that at long last all the components of my brother, Tony’s, stem cells have finally reached 100% and that there is a less than 1% chance of the leukaemia returning! On November 22nd, I celebrated my 1,000th day since the stem cell transplant! Can you believe that?? One thousand days – the mind boggles. I know some of you have been my constant stalwart prayer warriors throughout these last couple of years, and please can I say here ‘THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH. Bless you all a trillion, million, times over. I get sent lots of emails with video links about cats doing various humorous things, sometimes by themselves, sometimes with other cats and occasionally with different species entirely. The link below will raise a smile. It’s a myth that cats and dogs won’t get on together and this video link below shows just how well their relationship can be: http://1funny.com/dog-falls-for-cat/ This is another beautiful video that Valarie in Florida sent me a while back. Click on the link and just let it wash over you: it’s truly beautiful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H17edn_RZoY We all know how clever cats can be but did you read/hear the story about the cat that caught the bus every day? Here’s the link: I’ve written about therapy dogs that stay with patients until they pass from this life, but this video link is about Baxter, who at 19 year and 6 months was the oldest therapy dog. Sadly, on October 16th this year, Baxter slipped quietly from this world and will go down in the annals of history. Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIrDbzoOxZc My thanks to Kathy Pippig Harris who sent me the link with these words: ‘This is a must watch, there are angels around us, sometimes they are dogs.’ CAPTION COMPETITION: The winner to last month’s caption competition is Andrew Lane, from Hampshire, UK. You can see all the entries, including Andrew’s winning entry here, on this link: http://www.thedailymews.com/KittyBits/caption_competition_8.htm For this month’s caption competition, please click on the link below: http://www.thedailymews.com/KittyBits/caption_competition_9.htm Please send your entries by 21st November to the usual address. Don’t know the usual address? p.dewberry@ntlworld.com *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Jim Willis sent me a rather funny slant on the bowling link I’ve had for ages in the Mewsletter; http://members.shaw.ca/faithshannon/cats-bowling.htm *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Here is THAT bowling link: A hilarious and addictive game for you to play!!!! http://upchucky.com/games/hairball-bowling.html *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ BOOK QUIZ: (Back by popular request) Billy chose the book titles for the quiz this month – so be prepared! Billy wants the author to the book titles below and if you have a website you can nominate it, or you can nominate a favourite site. A modest prize will be given for the first respondent so hurry up and don’t miss out! Who wrote the following: 1. I like cats 2. In Praise of Cats 3. The Complete Cat Send your answers to p.dewberry@ntlworld.com *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ARTICLES: The third part of Lynn Schiffhorst’s exciting new series ‘Sergeant Pinky on Patrol: The Cats of Manhattan Story’ can be found on this link: http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/sergeant_pinky_on_patrol3.htm Jim Willis wrote an informative piece about the difficulties homing centres have when trying to home black cats and dogs and the ‘dark’ association with them. Read it here: http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/out_of_broom_closet.htm One of my friend’s from my writing class, Lee, wrote this lovely little story about a cat who lords it over a sweet little puppy. You will smile and even laugh out loud – as we did in our class. Read it here: http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/i_know_why_the_caged_worm_sings.htm James Colasanti Jr shares his life with a number of dogs. This beautiful story: A few more words about Butchy’ was recently published in Petwarmers. http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/just_a_few_words_about_butchy.htm Following on from Jim Willis’ article about black cats and dogs, here’s a piece about the myths and legends surrounding black cats: http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/blackcats.htm FIREWORK WARNINGS: In the UK, the 5th of November is traditionally ‘Guy Fawkes Night’ and it is celebrated with fireworks. But in recent years it’s become more of a Fireworks QUARTER as fireworks are heard throughout September, October and November. Diwhali – The Festival of Light – in the Hindu calendar also celebrates with fireworks around this time so it’s important to read the following article and take it seriously: http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/fireworkwarnings.htm BOOK AND PRODUCT REVIEWS: I’m always grateful when subscribers review books for me as I am sent so many books by publishers and direct from authors themselves and I don’t get an awful lot of ‘spare’ time to wade through them all. So I was thrilled when Jamaka Petzak (last month’s winner of the short story competition) reviewed Evil Cats: When Fluffy Cats Get Mean by Elia Anie. http://www.thedailymews.com/bookproductreviews/evil_cats_when_fluffy_cats_get_mean.htm If you have read a cat book and would like to review it for the Book Review section of the website, please contact me. And if you have used (or I should say, if YOUR CAT has used) a product that you’d like to review, again, please contact me. JIM WILLIS Although we’ve gone past Halloween now, it’s still not too late to make these great cookies for your cats and dogs. Jim sent me the following recipes which will go down well with the most discerning of feline or canine palettes! http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/cookies_for_cats_and_dogs.htm MEWSERS’ MEWSINGS I’m always pleased when cats write to let us know at the Daily Mews Office, what their lives are like in various parts of the world. Dympy – a 3-legged cat from the UK – writes about what life is like for her: http://www.thedailymews.com/mewsersmewsings/Dympy.htm If you have a cat who’d like to see their name in lights (well, more printed on a computer screen) please have them write their views, opinions, life story – or part of it up to now – to the usual address. Billy, Sam and Ollie will be on paw to admire and congratulate where necessary. Jimmy, our Resident Feline Correspondent, has written his views on the dreaded FIREWORKS and the nonsense of celebrating a FAILURE on 5th November. http://www.thedailymews.com/mewsersmewsings/fireworks.htm NAPPING ON A SUNBEAM Blue was a little feral kitten who became a life-long friend to the little boy who loved her: http://www.thedailymews.com/NAPPINGONASUNBEAM/Blue.htm General Sterling Price, the beautiful cat in Kathe’s story, is almost a mirror image of my wonderful Garfield. It brought a huge lump to my throat when I saw the photograph Kathe sent of her cat. http://www.thedailymews.com/NAPPINGONASUNBEAM/crying_is_good_medicine.htm It’s always hard to deal with the death of one’s pet, but if your cat passes away when you’ve been away on holiday or a business trip you are left with terrible guilt and the questions beginning with ‘what if I …’ constantly on your lips and in your thoughts. The next tribute was one such a case: http://www.thedailymews.com/NAPPINGONASUNBEAM/Flossy.htm And finally, don’t forget the second short story and poetry competition runs until 21st November. For more information, please click on the link below: http://www.thedailymews.com/KittyBits/short_story_competition2.htm Wherever you are in the world, keep warm, keep safe; happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it later this month and if you have any comments, views, or questions, please contact us; your feedback is invaluable to us. Until next time Take care, Your friend – Pauline: Editor Billy, Sam and Ollie: Associate Mews Editors |
