MEWSLETTER 64 - 2nd March 2008 Hi there and a very warm welcome to all the new subscribers who braved the downpours to warm themselves by the fireside in the Daily Mews Mansion. Please feel free to forward this Mewsletter in its entirety to all your feline loving family members and friends. And those of you with AOL, you’ll have to copy and paste the links into your browsers. Val Weigle from Florida won the heart ID tag from www.prettypawsaccessories.co.uk which delighted her, having just lost her beloved 20 year old Sabastian. Val spent a lot of time looking around the website and said that they have some pretty neat things on it. There is a wide variety of colours to choose from and Val chose a pretty pink heart ID tag for her cat Maya who is prone to wandering off. You can see the tag here on this link: http://www.prettypawsaccessories.co.uk/heart---cat-id-tag-50-p.asp . The tags are very reasonably priced and you can also take advantage of the free shipping to anywhere in the world at the moment. The answer to the question: ‘When was the website launched?’ is 2007 by Kelly. Hopefully, we’ll be having some more exciting offers with Pretty Paws in a few months’ time. Val also sent me this link (as did several other people) which you might enjoy: http://www.evtv1.com/player.aspx?itemnum=10113 Ally Cat Allies are asking for people to sign their petition as the cats (both owned and feral) in Cape May, New Jersey are still in jeopardy of being caught and killed. It’s a sad fact of life that when humans have problems, their pets suffer, either intentionally, or unintentionally. This next story came to me via www.petwarmers.com and is a sad way of life for some who are experiencing the financial downturn in the US. http://abcnews.go.com/Business/IndustryInfo/story?id=4211173&page=1 Michael Smith, whose story, ‘A Pyramid of Friends’ was featured last month wrote to let me know that the website address I gave at the end of his article is no longer working. If you’d like to sign up for Michael’s regular inspirational newsletters, please use this link: http://subs.zinester.com/86758/ Also on the subject of non-working website links, Carol Turner wrote to let me know that the Willi Whizkas website has had a complete overhaul and can now be accessed here: The Feline Advisory Bureau (FAB) is 50 years old this year and to celebrate they have a beautiful peace rose on offer. For more information go to www.fabcats.org Kevin, our brilliant and lovely vet, is running in the London Marathon this year on 13th April and is running for the Guide Dogs for the Blind association. If you’d like to sponsor him, please go to this link where you can give on line in safety: www.justgiving.com/kevincastle If you want to know more about the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, please click on this link: I mentioned in the previous Mewsletter that the extract taken from ANGEL CATS: Divine Messengers of Comfort by Allen and Linda Anderson really ‘spoke’ to me. The extract entitled ‘The Man Who Got His Purr Back’ told of Tim’s busy lifestyle and his subsequent ill health. His three cats positioned themselves as he lay on the floor in agony and he thought they were just looking out for him and purring over him. It’s well known and well documented that a cat’s purr has healing properties, so to have 3 cats purring over you – well, you ARE blessed – and healed!!! Why this was so poignant for me was because it reminded me of all the times I’ve had to lie on the sofa for various reasons and all the cats have positioned themselves around me. Timmy, for example, has rarely left my side since I was diagnosed with the leukaemia in June 2006. But something which may interest you happened back in November 2004. I’d had major surgery and was only allowed home on the promise that I would have complete bed rest for a month and then partial bed rest for another month after that. Each morning I’d get up and feed the cats and then have breakfast. Whereas the other cats went about their business and slept in other places in the house, Garfield and Timmy used to go upstairs to the office where they’d sleep most of the day. But the day after I came out of hospital, they both went to lay on the sofa where I’d got the duvet (quilt) and a pillow ready for my day long rest. I lay down on the sofa with them, Garfield near my head and Timmy near my chest. I’d be treated to a day of intense purring – which is very loving and therapeutic. This happened every day for the full month of bed rest and throughout the month of partial bed rest. On the day that I decided that I wouldn’t go and lay on the sofa after breakfast, Garfield and Timmy went straight upstairs after their breakfast. I hadn’t said anything to them – they just did it. That has always stuck in my mind because I thought then, how clever and intuitive cats are – they knew without me saying anything that I wouldn’t need their services at that time. Have any of you experienced anything like this with your cats or dogs? Please write to let me know and we’ll share our stories. I think Billy has been watching too much NCIS recently and getting bad habits. I was singing while on my computer and he just whacked me round the head like Agent Gibbs does to Di Noso (not sure of spelling). I thought he liked my singing! Here’s an interesting video which caused a stir when I sent it out to some friends with dogs. Apparently, ALL their dogs responded by rushing into the room where the computer was when they heard the baby crying on the video link. Please contact me in the usual way if your dog (or cat) reacts when a baby cries or seems distressed in anyway. Here’s the link: http://www.evtv1.com/player.aspx?itemnum=10644 The more observant among you may have spotted two new sections at the bottom of the navigation bar on the left hand side of the website. One of them, entitled ‘Other Mewsings’ is just a motley collection of writings that aren’t really cat-related, although sometimes my cats do feature in the stories, that I thought you might like to read at some point. http://www.thedailymews.com/OtherMewsings/intropage.htm The other section ‘Pauline’s Blog’ came about because for a long time a number of people suggested that I actually wrote a ‘blog’ about my health care issues instead of writing about them in the Mewsletter. I finally managed to find the time to do this and if you’re interested, you’ll be able to find out the latest details and developments. http://www.thedailymews.com/Pauline'sBlog/paulines_blog_intro.htm They’re not up to date at the moment but if you call back from time to time, you’ll find new bits added as and when time permits. Jack Stewart has written to let me know that their first Theta Healing course will be held at the Heathercliffe Hotel, Frodsham from May 9-11th. All the details can be found here. If you prefer sunnier climes, plus Zen magic try the idyllic Greek island of Paros in September. If you would like to put on a course in your area, and get paid for doing it, let Jack know. You can reach him on this email address: jack@organisationalhealing.org Cats like routines and will often instigate them themselves to ensure you are part of what they want to do. Billy has for quite a while now been around when I have my breakfast and I got very strong ‘vibes’ from him that he wanted me to give him a cuddle. He must have decided that this is a vital part of my day because while I have breakfast each morning he's hovering nearby, unable to settle - just waiting. So sometimes, after my wedge of melon and before my homemade muesli, I sit on the little sofa and pat my lap. He always looks up at me as if to say 'are you sure? You don't want to finish your breakfast first?' and I pat my lap again. He bounds up and we spend some quality time with him huddled into a ball purring fit to burst. It's become such a lovely morning ritual that I don't feel complete until we've had our cuddles. And maybe that's just what he thought and that's why he instigated it! Have any of your cats or dogs instigated a new routine for you to be part of? Please let us know in the usual way. NEW CAPTION COMPETITION! Carole in Ireland sent me a great photo of her cat and suggested that Mewsletter readers might like to find a caption for it. The best caption will win a modest prize so send your ideas in (as many times as you like) before the end of March to the usual address. Good luck! I’ll be liaising with Carole to see which caption is an outright winner. The link to the competition is given further into the Mewsletter. Roger Dean Kiser wrote to me with news of that he’s writing a new book entitled ‘The Rainbow Bridge – stories of love and devotion’. This is a book dedicated strictly to the memory of pets that have now crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. Anyone who is interested in getting their pet remembrance story published in this new book, please contact Roger at trampolineone@earthlink.net and he will send you the details. Roger stresses that you don’t need to be a published author to have your entries included – just follow his guidelines and write from your heart. So what are you waiting for! Write to Roger forthwith! My thanks to Claire in Ireland for the fantastic cartoon on the home page which is the funniest thing I’ve seen in ages. I have never laughed so much in all my life when I saw and all the cats (who were with me in the office at the time I was reading my emails) looked at me as if I was more than slightly deranged! And now on with the MEWS! *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* A hilarious and addictive game for you to play!!!! http://upchucky.com/games/hairball-bowling.html *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* BOOK QUIZ: The answers to last month’s book quiz are as follows: 1. You adopt just one more, that’s what! Earla Jean Hollon’s adorable story was originally published on www.petwarmers.com and she kindly gave me permission to include it on the website. http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/kitten_in_the_woodpile.htm Michael T Smith gave me permission to use this story that he wrote for www.petwarmers.com. He took on a 2-year old female cat called Kitten whose elderly owner had just passed away. It took him several years to win her over but patience won through in the end. It’s a heart-warming story. http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/love_has_to_be_earned.htm ED KOSTRO Ed works tirelessly for feral cats and has written a wonderful poem about Munchkin and Tuxedo – and you can read about them here on this link: http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/visit_with_2_old_friends.htm Ed and I were chatting recently about the games our cats like to play and Ed told me that Buddy taught him how to play some excellent games. Here’s a funny look at what Ed learnt from the Gamesmaster himself, Buddy, the orange tabby… http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/cats_love_games_too.htm FELINE FITNESS Our Resident Vet, in New Zealand has written about what happened when Chico a fluffy cat was severely savaged by a dog. Jimmy, our Resident Feline Correspondent for the Daily Mews, has this to say on the matter this month. http://www.thedailymews.com/mewsersmewsings/aligning.htm Lizzy from Newfoundland in Canada wrote to me recently to tell me how she had landed on all four paws when a small boy with his parents came into a pet store and took her home. Here’s her letter: http://www.thedailymews.com/mewsersmewsings/Lizzy.htm Ed Kostro’s cat, Natasha, has added her voice to the Mewsers of the World and written her New Year’s Resolutions. WILLI WHIZKAS Little Dumpty Roo landed on all four paws when Carol and John Turner adopted her into their home at Tom Cat Towers. She writes her own story here: http://www.thedailymews.com/Williwhizkas/how_I_came_to_TCT.htm Well, I think that’s about it for this month. It’s a shorter issue than last month which I’m sure many of you will be thrilled about! I did try to make it shorter but failed miserably on that score. I do hope you’ll enjoy this issue and until the next time, those who celebrated Mother’s Day today (we did here in the UK) I hope you all had a lovely day and that you were made to feel special. Don’t forget, I value your feedback, good or bad and if anyone has sent me anything which hasn’t appeared on the website yet, please write to remind me. I had shingles at the beginning of the month which set me back somewhat. Take care Pauline, Billy, Timmy, Sam and Ollie BACK TO THE MEWSLETTER Archive Index
