MEWSLETTER 61 NOVEMBER 29 2007

Hi there and gentle head butts and warm purrs to everyone who made it through the Portals of the Daily Mews in recent weeks. You are very welcome and please feel free to pass this Mewsletter on to your feline-loving family and friends. Remember those of you who use AOL will have to copy and paste the links into your browsers.

Belated Thanksgiving wishes for the 22nd November. This is the day when people give thanks for all their blessings and although we here in the UK don’t celebrate it, it did make me think back to this time last year (November 2006) when I was undergoing 5 weeks of aggressive intensive chemotherapy in hospital – what a long way I’ve come! And I do constantly give thanks for all the wonderful prayers that were ushered up on my behalf – and still are – thank YOU to ALL my prayer warriors. Bless you and your families, human, feline and canine at this special time.  Thank you also, to Laura Dumm, who drew the wonderful Thanksgiving cartoon for the Home Page.  What a talented lady she is!

I’m sorry this Mewsletter is slightly later being distributed than I intended but from 14th – 16th November, I was in hospital in London having a liver biopsy. I now have the results and the consultant still isn’t quite sure if my body is trying to reject my brother’s stem cells. However, they went ahead with a lymphocyte (white blood cells) transfusion on Monday of this week (26th) which will hopefully strengthen Tony’s cells and take over mine – that’s the intention, anyway. If not, it’ll mean having chemotherapy all over again, and another stem cell transplant – and I don’t really want to go through all that again.

I’m a bit surprised now that my hair has grown back (I think I was bald for about 4 – 5 months), because I’ve always had thick curly hair and it’s come back still thick with a slight wave, but very soft and several shades of grey so that it looks as if I have my own resident striped tabby cat on top of my head!  Actually, I had my third cut today and my hairdresser, Lesley, always remarks how soft it is and how quickly it is growing. I used to have my hair coloured to hide the slight grey that I had but having carried out a lot of research into the long term toxicity levels of chemicals in our food, drinks, cosmetics and cleaning products, I won’t be getting my hair coloured again, unless I can find natural dyes. I’m not that vain anyway and I’ve already decided that I’m going to grow old disgracefully!  I’ve even changed my deodorant to a non-aluminium product as there is a link between aluminium in deodorants and breast cancer.  I buy my cosmetic products from an organic company called Green People – the link is here: www.greenpeople.co.uk

What a wonderful response I had to last month’s Mewsletter when I asked if you thought animals had souls. Many of you believe that animals do, indeed, have souls, and a lot of you have experienced ADCs (or After Death Connections) on losing your own beloved pets. I have gathered them together in an article which I’ll give you the link to later in this Mewsletter.

And some of you wrote to say that despite having had a very long and loving relationship with your cats that you haven’t had a visit and you’re upset about that. I don’t know why some pets come back and not others. Biggles is the only one of my cats who came back a few times in the weeks following his death but Charlie, Joey, Ellie, Max and Garfield haven’t.  And you all know how close Garfield and I were in this life – but for all I know, he could be watching me without me knowing he’s there.

A few people mentioned that I seemed ‘down’ in the previous Mewsletter and I’m sorry if that seemed to be the case. I wasn’t feeling very well and I’d been experiencing ‘abusive’ emails from a nutcase – it all came at the wrong time as I’d recently lost yet another friend that I’d met at the hospital so I was feeling sad about that as well. Hopefully, this issue will see me back on form sparkling with wit and bon homie!

No one wanted the free books I was offering ‘Stuff on my Cat’ by Mario Garza but they are still available, if you’d like a copy.  Just write to the usual address with your postal address and I’ll post them out to you. You could always give them to someone as a Christmas present.

Several people sent me the following link which is absolutely hilarious. I defy you NOT to laugh when you watch it. I hope the link works – if not, let me know and I’ll try and send it to you via an email. I have watched it dozens of times now and it ALWAYS make me laugh out loud!!

Last month I did a Cat Facts quiz and only one intrepid soul was brave enough to enter so he wins the prize. Well done, Jared Kline in Belgium – you get a fortnight’s holiday – all expenses paid – to the Bahamas.  Just kidding – by the time this Mewsletter hits your inboxes, Jared will have received a nice book.

The answers to the quiz are as follows:

1.         How many teeth do cats have? Adult cats have 30 teeth.

2.         Which part of a cat’s body has the most bones? Its tail.

3.         What is a cat better at than any other animal? Listening.

4.         How well can cats hear? Very well – up to 100s of feet away.

5.         What term is use for a cat’s white paws? Its gloves.

6.         What do cats spend about 1/3 of their lives doing? Grooming themselves

Well done, again, to Jared in Belgium.

BOOK QUIZ:

I want the author to the book titles below and if you have a website you can nominate it, or you can nominate a favourite site. A modest prize will be given for the first respondent so hurry up and don’t miss out!

Who wrote the following:

1.                    Marley and Me

2.                   Cloister Cats

3.                   My Cat Loves Me Naked

A’MEWS’MENT ARCADE

Mike Kolonel sent me this funny quote some time back and I’ve only just found it again, lurking among the hundreds of emails I’ve yet to deal with. It is funny, and you may just identify with the sentiments.

ARTICLES

Lynn Schiffhorst has written another wonderful episode in the life of little blind Jewish girl, Malkah, and her kitten, Honey. You can read it here:

http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/honeygetshanukkahgift.htm

Marjorie Dorfman has written another amusing look in the foibles of felines and tackled the great beast of the cat carrier. You can read it here:

BOOK REVIEWS

Barbara Moss sent me a great little book which would make a really nice stocking filler as a Christmas present. It’s called Working Cats of Southern New England and you can read the review here:

http://www.thedailymews.com/bookproductreviews/workingcats.htm

If you’d like a copy of the book, which is priced $10.95 then contact Barbara at bee642@msn.com or check out her website at www.barbcat.com/myweb/

Another book I read and loved was Teresa Mancuso’s Cats Do It Better Than People. I’ve had this book for ages now and I took it with me when I went into hospital recently. Split into 12 sections, each deals with a particular theme and our very own Ed Kostro has a couple of entries. My favourite was when he rescued a little cat from a car park and sneaked it into his hotel in a bag. A beautiful young woman got into the lift with Ed and they just smiled ‘hello’. As the woman got out at her floor, the kitten chose that very moment to contribute to the occasion but uttering his very best MRRRROW. The woman turned around to Ed and gave him a contemptuous look – as he said, if looks could kill …

This book is on the Home Page on the left hand navigation column and can be purchased from all the Amazon stores. You can read the review here:

CAT CHAT

This month, our resident Feline Correspondent, Jimmy, has written a thoughtful piece on doing things your own way. He was feeling very subdued when he wrote this item because one of his siblings, Poppy, had just passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jimmy, his remaining siblings and his People, Jack and Anne.

Here’s the link to Jimmy’s article:

CHARITIES AND RESCUE CENTRES

Strictly speaking, www.petsinheaven.com.au is not a charity. It is a professional service providing a dignified final journey for pets in a customised hearse by Ian Robinson and his daughter, Alyssa, in Australia.

ED KOSTRO

Fat Louie is a much-beloved cat who was found by Ed when he was a kitten. He later found out he was FIV + but Ed decided not to take the vet’s suggestion to have Louie put to sleep but to let him live out his days in the happy manner to which he’d become accustomed. To celebrate Thanksgiving, Fat Louie gives thanks for his many blessings, and you can read them here:

http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/fatlouiegivesthanks.htm

Ed has also written a very informative article about living with FIV which you can read here:

http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/FIVneedn'tbedeathsentence.htm

FELINE FITNESS

I am often asked why cats toilet in inappropriate places and as much as you may not want to hear the reply, very often it’s the fault of the owner.  You can read Litter Tray Blues here on this link:

http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/litter_tray_blues.htm

NAPPING ON A SUNBEAM

Following on from last month’s question as to whether or not you thought animals had souls, I’ve put together an article based on the responses I received. You can read it here:

http://www.thedailymews.com/NAPPINGONASUNBEAM/after_death_connections.htm

Lanie Blackman wrote this beautiful poem for her dog, Brandi, who appeared to her in a dream. I’m sure this poem will help many of us who feel guilty when we’ve had to make that awful decision to put our beloved companions to sleep to ease their suffering. Lanie was so touched by all the emails that came into www.PetWarmers.com  (who first published this poem) that she wrote to me and said that she was preparing to write a book based upon people’s experiences, so if you want to write to Lanie, contact her here on:  lovemy4goldens@hughes.net  I’m sure she’d love to hear your stories.

The link to Lanie’s extraordinary poem is here:

http://www.thedailymews.com/NAPPINGONASUNBEAM/soft_whisper.htm

Jimmy, our resident Feline Writer for the Daily Mews, sadly lost one of his siblings earlier in the month. Here is Poppy’s tribute:

http://www.thedailymews.com/NAPPINGONASUNBEAM/Poppy.htm

PURRFECT POETRY

Mary Light, in the UK, sent me this poem, which I think sums up how most of us feel about visitors who frown on the dust and cats’ (and dogs’) hairs when they visit! Here’s the link:

http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/my_cats_live_here.htm

WILLI WHISKAS

Tushtots, who lives with Willie and Little Dumpty Roo, has written his own account of how he came to fall on hard times, before ending up living in Tom Cat Towers. It’s a sad story and one can’t imagine what he must have been going through, or how he felt. All any of us want is to be loved and appreciated – and that goes for our companion animals as well.

Click here to read his story:

 http://www.thedailymews.com/Williwhizkas/Tushtots_at_Tom_Cat_Towers.htm

And that’s about it for now. The next issue will be out just before Christmas so if you have any items you’d like to see, please let me know at the usual address.

Take care, and all good wishes

Your friend

Pauline, Billy, Timmy, Sam and Ollie

A Cat's Prayer'

Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.

Let the sun shine where I lay,
Keep me young so I may play.
And most of all ...
Bless the people I adore,
And guard me from the dog next door.

PRAISE FOR THE OCTOBER 2005 MEWSLETTER Thank you very much for another wonderful Mewsletter.  I look forward to it each month, and this month was especially fine.  There is enough in it to be able to read at leisure over several days, which sets it apart from many more compact sites, which are finished in a few minutes.  Your Mewsletter is more of a digest, which I can go back to for something new over and over again.  I appreciate very much the work that you put into it, and the contributions of all your feline staff.  Thanks to Ricky, I may even take up yoga.

All the best from rural Belgium, Jared Kline
