MEWSLETTER 57 July 30 2007
Purrs to all of our friends! Welcome to the Mewsletter for August 2007! For all of you new subscribers and for all the subscribers who have been here forever, allow me to pass along a gentle head butt and welcome you back to this month’s issue of the Mewsletter. As many of you know, I am helping Pauline with her website, www.thedailymews.com while she is in the hospital. And while we are happy that Pauline is on the road to recovery, we have some tragic news to report on Ricky. Please read the update below. Because we have so much to cover in this issue, I’ve broken the information into sections and included a brief overview of what you’ll miss if you stop reading now! About Pauline: A Quick Update from our friend and the tragic loss of Ricky… Dublin Breed Ban: Can you help make a difference? How Much Is Your Cat Worth?: This is a great article about an expensive cat – just like our own… New Stories and Poetry (by Ed Kostro, Jack Stewart and Stacy Mantle) Catfish Month: Did you know that August is Catfish month? Cat Trivia Just for fun… Cat Joke: Because I found a funny one at the time of press… Many of you have written to me for an update, and your wish is my command. Read below for a brief overview of Pauline’s recovery and the recent loss of her beloved Ricky. About PaulineAs you know, Pauline went in for a bone marrow transplant earlier in January, and has been doing quite well with the procedure! She had a recent setback in late April due to a respiratory infection, and this landed her back into the hospital for a short time. However, tragic news has hit the home front and I hope that you will all take a moment to send a quick email to Pauline. Last Friday, she had to take Ricky in to be euthanized. He had been developing Lymphoma and most of his nasal passages were deteriorated. He was not in good enough shape to have chemo done successfully, as it could easily have put him into a coma or worse. Also, the reconstruction of his nasal passages would have too much for him. The toxins that were present in his nasal discharge and faeces could have triggered a relapse for Pauline, and so the decision was made to help Ricky through to the rainbow bridge. I know that you all join me in giving our prayers and good thoughts to Pauline, who has really been struggling this year and last. With the loss of Garfield and now Ricky, well Pauline has shown me that anything can be overcome with enough faith. She will hopefully be well enough to do some writing about this most recent tragedy next month. Writing helps to cure all ills… She is now home and on the road to recovery, in hopes of taking the Mewsletter over again very soon (which is good because I’m not sure I’m doing such a great job trying to juggle work and PetsWeekly and TheDailyMews and still write…) Thanks for bearing with me while I make the attempt though. Meanwhile, Pauline thanks you profusely for your prayers, loving thoughts and your donations. She also very much appreciates your tolerance in putting up with me as I try to do a good job with the Mewsletter… ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How Much Would You Spend to Save Your Cat?: This was a great article that I ran across recently, and if you haven’t seen it yet, please take a look. As it turns out, we’re not all a bunch of “cat worshippers” after all. Apparently after something hits MSNBC, it’s the “norm”. We always knew that we love our pets as much as our two-legged family members, but some people are just finding that out! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Webbox Contest: I’m STILL waiting to hear back on the results of the Webbox Contest that happened last month. If anyone has received information that they have won, or has received a prize, would you let me know? I’m waiting on a response from the company on the winners, which did not come in prior to our publishing this issue. I’ll try to have the info in next month’s Mewsletter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dublin Breed Ban: This is an all-call to our friends in the UK. We were recently notified that Dublin has banned 11 breeds of dogs, so while I know this is a cat site, I hope it’s okay to mention that our Dublin dogs needs us. For more information, click here. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Catfish Month! Did you know that August is National Catfish Month (for those in the states)? Who would have thought we would have a national month devoted to catfish? It must have been started by our feline friends who are infinite in their knowledge and know that cat food containing catfish is actually quite good for them, but only if prepared correctly! Please don’t start feeding your cats raw catfish… ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Bit of Cat-Trivia A cat can be either right-pawed or left-pawed. A cat can jump as much as seven times its height. A cat cannot see directly under its nose. This is why the cat cannot seem to find titbits on the floor. A cat has 230 bones in its body. A human only has 206 bones. A cat has four rows of whiskers. A cat in a hurry can sprint at about thirty-one miles per hour. A cat sees about six times better than a human at night because of the tapetum lucidum , a layer of extra reflecting cells which absorb light. A cat uses its whiskers to determine if a space is too small to squeeze through. The whiskers act as feelers or antennae, helping the animal to judge the precise width of any passage. A cat will almost never meow at another cat. Cats use this sound for humans. A cat will clean itself with paw and tongue after a dangerous experience or when it has fought with another cat. This is believed to be an attempt by the animal to soothe its nerves by doing something natural and instinctive. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Cat Joke: Four men were bragging about how smart their cats are. The first man was an Engineer, the second man was an Accountant, the third man was a Chemist, and the fourth was a Government Worker. To show off, the Engineer called to his cat. "T-square, do your stuff." T-square pranced over to a desk, took out some paper and a pen and promptly drew a circle, a square, and a triangle. Everyone agreed that was pretty smart, but the Accountant said his cat could do better. He called his cat and said, "Spreadsheet, do your stuff." Spreadsheet went out into the kitchen and returned with a dozen cookies. He divided them into 4 equal piles of 3 cookies each. Everyone agreed that was good. But the Chemist said his cat could do better. He called his cat and said, "Measure, do your stuff." Measure got up, walked over to the fridge, took out a quart of milk, got a 10 ounce glass from the cupboard and poured exactly 8 ounces without spilling a drop. Everyone agreed that was also impressive. Then the three men turned to the Government Worker and said, "What can your cat do?" The Government Worker called to his cat and said, "Coffee Break, do your stuff." Coffee Break jumped to his feet, ate the cookies, drank the milk, peed on the paper, sexually assaulted the other three cats, claimed he injured his back while doing so, filed a grievance report for unsafe working conditions, put in for Workers Compensation and went home for the rest of the day on sick leave. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Stories We have had several new stories sent in and for that I thank you!
