MEWSLETTER 56 May 14 2007

Purrs to all of our friends!  Welcome to the Mewsletter for May 2007, the month to honour your favourite mom, and please don’t forget all of your “cat moms” – they work just as hard as anyone!  For all of you new subscribers and for all the subscribers who have been here forever, allow me to pass along a gentle head butt and welcome you back to this month’s issue of the Mewsletter.  As many of you know, I am helping Pauline with her website, www.thedailymews.com while she is in the hospital.  Because we have so much to cover in this issue, I’ve broken the information into sections and included a brief overview of what you’ll miss if you stop reading now!

About Pauline: A Quick Update from our friend and request for funding on a boarding bill that is growing large!

New Contest from PetsWeekly: Win a Free Drinkwell’s Water Fountain – just sign up for our weekly newsletter!

Clarification:  Timmy or Jimmy? My mistake.

New Article in Pacific Yachting Magazine:  An all-call for moral support on Stacy’s feature this month.

Mother’s Day and Kitties:  Happy Mother’s Day!

Animal Trivia for Mother’s Day – a few romantic gestures…

New Stories and Poetry (by Jack Stewart, Stacy Mantle and Ron Hevener)

Just For Fun: A fun video all about cats!

Letters:  Where are all of our behaviour questions???

Many of you have written to me for an update, and your wish is my command.  Read on to for a brief overview of Pauline’s recovery.

About Pauline

As you know, Pauline went in for a bone marrow transplant earlier in January, and has been doing quite well with the procedure!  She had a recent setback in late April due to a respiratory infection, and this landed her back into the hospital for a short time.  From what I hear, she is now home again and doing her best, which we all know is difficult for Pauline, to stay down.  She has a wonderful nurse who helps her out during this critical recovery time and lots of support from her Mewsers.  She thanks you profusely for your prayers and loving thoughts.

Now – it recently came to my attention that Pauline has a very large ($1,800+) boarding bill from having to place her beloved kitties in the cattery during the time of her recovery.  Laura Dumm, Jill Carpenter and myself have taken it upon us to offer all of Pauline’s fellow Mewsers an opportunity to help out with this boarding bill.   Our goal is to raise at least $1,800 to help her out.  Here’s the catch – since she is in the UK and we are in the US, it presents a bit of an issue in foreign transaction fees to send individual checks and so forth.  So my business partner, Jill Carpenter and I, have opted to use our business, GrokQuest to collect donations for Pauline.  In this way, we can send out one LARGE check (cheque) and avoid transaction fees and conversion rates for a series of small transactions.  Just click the “Donate Now” button at the top of this page: www.thedailymews.com.

I ask that you remember all of the wonderful entertainment that you have received as a result of Pauline’s website.  Yes – I’m trying to guilt you into donating.  But, what a wonderful cause!  This is devoted to paying for the boarding of five kitties that motivated her site, www.thedailymews.com and has been operating even while she receives a bone marrow transplant!  I hope that everyone can afford a few dollars for this effort.  We have been given years of entertainment and information from Pauline, and for the cost of a movie, we could make a huge difference in both her and her kitties lives.

Okay – I’ll stop begging now.  We do have a lot to cover this issue, so bear with me!  I’m going to try and break it into sections that are a little easier to coast through in case you don’t have time to read the entire Mewsletter!  But, if you have sent something to me and we haven’t covered it in this issue, please let me know.  It’s hard to negotiate two sites, one that is weekly (www.petsweekly.com) and one that is monthly (www.thedailymews.com).  I’ll do my best to catch up with you on the next Mewsletter with anything I’ve missed!  Meanwhile, let’s get started!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Clarification:  Last month, I referred to Pauline’s cat, Jimmy.  I meant, of course, Timmy.  She has not picked up any new cats and is actually just proud and happy to have the ones she has.  Right now is not the time to be adopting, as much as I’m sure she would like too.  I just wanted to clear that up!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

New Article in Pacific Yachting Magazine:  I have to do a little “self-praise” here in hopes you will all run out and buy this month’s issue of Pacific Yachting Magazine.  I have a feature article in there this month called, “Pets Ahoy!” and I’m trying to get them to give me a column.  So for all you cat lovers, boat lovers and avid readers of all things print, I hope you’ll forgive this blatant call asking that you pick up the magazine.  It would be even better if you could write in and tell the editor how much you LOVE my writing and how much you would LOVE to see my articles in the future!  Yep – we even talk about keeping our precious kitties safe on the open sea!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New Contest:  We have a new contest at PetsWeekly right now and all you have to do is subscribe to our weekly (usually every 10 days) newsletter.  The link is on the page, or you can click here to enter.  The prize?  A brand new Drinkwell’s Water Fountain donated by Pet Planet Outfitters!  We will have a drawing soon, so please enter today!
I’m waiting to hear back on the results of the Webbox Contest that happened last month. If anyone has received information that they have won, or has received a prize, would you let me know?  I’m waiting on a response from the company on the winners, which did not come in prior to our publishing this issue.  I’ll try to have the info in next month’s Mewsletter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mother’s Day!

Don’t forget that May 13 is (sorry, was) Mother’s Day!  And please don’t forget all of our kitty and puppy moms who work so hard!  We all know that being a “pet mom” isn’t easy… You may also want to remember your momma-kitties as well!  I know that if we don’t get Mama-san anything for Mother’s Day, even though she can’t stand her kids, she would be very upset.  Her favourite gift is a laser light and a special treat from Life’s Abundance.  But, if you go the “flower route” be sure you check on the best types of flowers for your cat home.  As you probably already know, many flowers are poisonous to precious felines, so be sure you review the article, Poisonous Plants and review our checklist of Toxic Plants before you leave them lying about.

Mother’s Day Cat (and other animals) Trivia

Kittens are born both blind and deaf, but the vibration of their mother's purring is a physical signal that the kittens can feel - it acts like a homing device, signalling them to nurse.

The average woman in 17th-century America gave birth to 13 children.

The embryos of tiger sharks fight each other while in their mother's womb, the survivor being the baby shark that is born.

When the female embryo is only six weeks old, it makes preparations for her motherhood by developing egg cells for future offspring. (When the baby girl is born, each of her ovaries carries about a million egg cells, all that she will ever have).

A baby Harp seal doubles its weight in only five days after birth, thanks to the amount of protein in its mother's milk. It takes a horse sixty days to double its birth weight

A female kangaroo that has become a recent mother holds a reserve embryo inside of her after her first baby has crawled into her pouch. This embryo is an "emergency back-up" baby, should the first one die prematurely.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Mother’s Day Joke: (And no – I’m not advocating outdoor cats!) A couple was going out for the evening. The last thing they did was to put the cat out. The taxi arrived, and as the couple walked out of the house, the cat shoots back in. So the husband goes back inside to chase it out. The wife, not wanting it known that the house would be empty, explained to the taxi driver "He's just going upstairs to say goodbye to my mother." A few minutes later, the husband got into the taxi and said, "Sorry I took so long, the stupid thing was hiding under the bed and I had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out!"
Thanks for your patience, everyone!  If you find any major errors, please let me know. If you find minor ones, well - just pretend you didn't.  Life's too short.
Please remember Pauline in your prayers and wish her a speedy recovery, and have a very happy Mother’s Day! We’ll be back with a Father’s Day update in June!
A Cat's Prayer'
Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.
Let the sun shine where I lay,
Keep me young so I may play.
And most of all ...
Bless the people I adore,
And guard me from the dog next door.
PRAISE FOR THE OCTOBER 2005 MEWSLETTER Thank you very much for another wonderful Mewsletter.  I look forward to it each month, and this month was especially fine.  There is enough in it to be able to read at leisure over several days, which sets it apart from many more compact sites, which are finished in a few minutes.  Your Mewsletter is more of a digest, which I can go back to for something new over and over again.  I appreciate very much the work that you put into it, and the contributions of all your feline staff.  Thanks to Ricky, I may even take up yoga.
All the best from rural Belgium, Jared Kline
