MEWSLETTER 45: MARCH 13 2006 (Issue 3) Hi there, everyone, and a very warm headbutts and purrs welcome to all the new subscribers who valiantly made their way through the Daily Mews cat flap since the last Mewsletter. Please feel free to pass this Mewsletter on to your feline loving family members or friends. My apologies for this slightly tardier issue but my health has been pretty bad the past few weeks and I was confined not only to the house, but to bed for several weeks, only getting up to make a drink and see to the cats. It’s a pity they can’t cook – maybe they would have conjured up some gourmet feline treats for me!! I can dream! Garfield will be 20 (yes, TWENTY!!!) on 27th of this month. I’m currently planning his birthday hat for the customary birthday photo call. I can feel his pleasure at wearing another ghastly birthday hat from here!!! He’s doing really well since his operation in January and he is as affectionate as ever, only now his kisses are sweetly scented and a pleasure to receive. Speaking of age, Ed Kostro sent me a link to the oldest cat in the world – a 30-year-old cat from Wales (UK), which is yet to be verified. At the moment, the oldest recorded cat is Spook who is 23 and lives in Canada! So Garfield’s in with a chance, I’d say. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/south_west/4288399.stm I thought we’d do a ‘poll’ for the next Mewsletter to see how old your cats are. Will you please write to p.dewberry@ntlworld.com letting me know their ages? I know a number of you have elderly geriatric felines – so lets see if we can set some records of our own! Thank you. Garfield is currently preparing the next Book Quiz for the Easter issue, which is, of course, next month. Once again he’ll set the book titles and will hope that your felines will respond as they did for the Christmas Book Quiz. Each feline who enters the quiz will receive a modest prize – so be on the look out next month! Our weather has been pretty cold here in the UK but we missed the blizzards that were forecast so the millions of candles I bought (in case of power cuts) will have to stay in the cupboard under the stairs, and I guess I’ll have to work my way slowly through all the tins of soup and tin beans throughout the rest of the year! (Just don’t stand too close!) Interspersed with the cold frosty mornings, the days have sometimes blossomed into bright spring like days and I saw Ricky sitting on the bench in the garden practising some new Yoga moves. First he sat facing the west for several minutes, eyes closed, meditating, then when I next looked out of the window, he was facing east, eyes closed and meditating. Then he came indoors and gave his bottom a thoroughly good cleaning … anyone for Yoga????? *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Amazing Cats A’mews’ment Arcade Cat Chat Cudell Street Cats by Laura Dumm Ed Kostro Mewsers’ Mewsings Napping on a Sunbeam Purrfect Poetry Quiz *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* A great new stress buster that will give you hours of fun – click on the link here: http://svt.se/hogafflahage/hogafflaHage_site/Kor/hestekor.swf Just click on each horse to set them off and click on them again to stop them. Glorious Cats by Lesley Anne Ivory 2. Cats by Anna Pollard 3. Of Cats and Kin by Helga Harrison. Thank you to Leny in Holland and Jared in Belgium who entered. A prize is on its way to Holland even as we speak. Now for this month’s quiz. I want the author to the book titles below and if you have a website you can nominate it, or you can nominate a favourite site. A modest prize will be given for the first respondent so hurry up and don’t miss out! Remember that there may be more than one book with the same title so scroll down a little, perhaps. 1. This is her story as told to Timmy by email. If you have a cat that has warned you about some impending danger, please let me know and we’ll feature the story in a future update. Here is the link to Penny’s story: http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/pennyandtheflood.htm A’MEWS’MENT ARCADEJena in Texas sent me the very humorous ‘Guide to Human Beings’ written for cats. Click on the link below to read what they’re teaching felines these days! http://www.thedailymews.com/amewsments/guidetohumanbeings.htm I love anything to do with words, word games, word derivations etc and I was delighted when Mike in Canada sent me this wonderful play on words with ‘cat’ in them. http://www.thedailymews.com/amewsments/cat-tionary.htm CAT CHAT: Life as a feral isn’t an easy one. But sometimes a feral cat is given a new chance and life is never the same again. Read Whatsit’s (Sue’s lovely longhaired feral), story and how life has new meaning for her now. http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/whatsit.htm CUDELL STREET CATSAfter losing two cats within a short space of time, Laura Dumm, our resident illustrator took a break to refresh herself. She’s back this month with a sparkling new cartoon strip starring Bogart, the little ginger kitten born to Elsie – the feral. You’ll fall in love with him immediately! http://www.thedailymews.com/Cudellstreetcats/bogartthebeginning.htm ED KOSTROEd never ceases to amaze me at his capacity to reach out to the lost and lonely, left behind animals that are still roaming the streets of New Orleans. Many people think that these animals must have all been rescued by now and rehomed, but sadly this is not the case. There are still many more animals needing homes and if you can find a small space for one (or more) then please click on the big link on the Home Page. Many dogs are running in packs. They are starving and desperate and will rip apart any weakened animal they come across. This poem is a true story about a dog that would not leave a blind cat to fend for herself – he was her Knight in New Orleans. http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/knightinneworleans.htm MEWSERS’ MEWSINGSOllie has been up to his tricks again recently and you can read about his latest Greatest Adventure here: http://www.thedailymews.com/mewsersmewsings/Olliesgreatestadventure.htm Timber from Maryland, USA, has been in correspondence with Ollie by email and is in total agreement with Ollie’s rantings on food combinations. Timber, who was 4 at the end of January, lives with his ‘Mommy’, Bridget, who celebrated her 10th birthday the day after Timber. I think we’re going to hear a lot more from Timber in future months as he seems to have a lot to say for himself! To read about Timber’s disgust at cat food combinations, please click here: http://www.thedailymews.com/mewsersmewsings/timberscatfooddisgusts.htm Like I said, Timber has an opinion on a lot of issues, and another one he has aired is on the small humans that share his living space. You can read his views here: http://www.thedailymews.com/mewsersmewsings/littlepeople.htm While I was languishing on the sofa these past few weeks, Sam, Ricky, Billy and Ollie were on ‘looking after Mum while she’s sick’ duty. They had obviously drawn up a rota so that there was always some one with me, which freed the others up to carry out their own personal pursuits until it was time for their shift. Duties included loudly sniffing my face, particularly my closed eyes, and meowing to see if I was ok, following by a lot of turning round in circles trying to make a nest either on my lap or next to me. Deep sighing followed if I got up from the sofa for any reason and fresh nest making was invoked when I returned. There were occasional tussles for the cover I had over me, as it was unthinkable, that I – the sick person – should have more cover than the duty feline. What was I thinking! Occasionally there were two duty felines watching me so I had purring in stereo – which is a lovely accompaniment to sleep and probably one of the reasons why I don’t mind these enforced bed rests from time to time! Timmy, as always, is with Garfield looking after him but he would stop by each day to check that I had everything I needed and to get a full report from the cat on duty. As Garfield is no longer able to do ‘care’ duties, Timmy would then report back to Garfield giving him an update. Timmy has written an account of his life as Garfield’s carer and you can read it here: http://www.thedailymews.com/mewsersmewsings/timmycarer.htm Included in Timmy’s article is the photo showing Timmy welcoming Garfield home from the vets by kissing him. He had really missed his friend that day. In case you missed Ollie’s original article on food combinations (and to see what Timber is referring to) you may want to catch up by reading it here: http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/prawnsandwhat.htm NAPPING ON A SUNBEAMIt’s never easy dealing with the loss of a pet, particularly one that you’ve had for many years. Even if a pet has only been in your family for a short while, it has already taken a place in your heart so when that pet moves on to Rainbow Bridge, it’s a hard wrench to let them go. Ed Kostro wrote to tell me that Tuffy, the little feral cat he found under the crawl space, passed away recently. You can read about her (and all the other animals he shares his life with) in his wonderful book ‘Curious Creatures, Wondrous Waifs’ which is available from Amazon.co.uk/.com and Barnes and Noble.com. To read about little Tuffy, please click on the link: http://www.thedailymews.com/NAPPINGONASUNBEAM/tuffy.htm Ed’s book will be featured very soon in a new section on book and product reviews that I’m adding to the website. It would have been there this month if I hadn’t been so sick – so sorry about that Ed, and all the other lovely folk who’ve sent me books and items to review! Coming soon – I promise! PURRFECT POETRY We have some more cat haiku this month written by Diana, inspired by her wonderful ginger cat Jack. (Is it just a coincidence that a good number of the contributors and subscribers have ginger cats!!!! – perhaps I should do a poll of coat colourings!) You can read Diana’s haiku here: http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/haiku4.htm The next thrilling and nail-biting instalment of Orlando’s Adventures by Jackie Brooks is also now on site (with a great illustration by Laura Dumm – as always!) – and you can read about him here: http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/orlandoescape.htm My cat website recommendation this month is www.thecompletecat.com which is a great site. If you subscribe you’ll receive an e-book in pdf format absolutely free called ‘Pamper Your Pet’. You’ll receive weekly updates from the web host, Glen, who says this: The Complete Cat features The Complete Book of Cats Online. Everything about Cats. Cat Stuff, Cat Articles, Cat Posters, Cat Health, Cat Training, Cat Care, Cat Calendars and more – so be sure to check it out! For those of you who live in the UK, do you know of anyone who would like to give a good and loving home to a 9 year old ginger and white cat called Tigger? At the moment he has been residing in a cattery since November when his owner was hospitalised. She is now out of hospital but unable to care for him. Five months in a cattery is not good for Tigger and he is becoming depressed so if you think you can give him a home, please contact me. This is in the Kent area but please don’t let distance stop you from giving him a good home. He is a very affectionate and loving cat and I’m sure he’ll settle down very quickly. I would take him in myself, but Garfield needs 24/7 care and I feel that 6 cats in a two-bed roomed house is Purrfect! Thank you. And finally, a wry observation sent in by Hart Dowd in Canada. He said: ‘I’ve never understood why women love cats. Cats are independent, they don’t listen, they don’t come in when you call, they like to stay out all night, and when they’re home, they like to be left alone and sleep. In other words, every quality that women hate in a man, they love in a cat. ‘ Enough said!!! Well, I think that about wraps it up for this month. Thank you to all those who contact me on a regular basis asking for Garfield updates, and to pray for both my health and his – it is very much appreciated. And thank you to all those who also send me lots of good links – I can’t always add them because I forget! But one I have added this month is www.catdrinkingsongs.com, which has been sent to me by about 6 different people – check it out – it’s great! Until next time – take care and have a Purrfect month Pauline - Editor Garfield - Chief technician and Assistant Editor Billy and Timmy - Video reviewer and care of the elderly (respectively) Sam - Chief Purrer on Mum watch and Ethnic Minority advisor Ricky - Health Guru and Psy-cat-therapist Ollie - Chief Mischief Maker and All Round AngelBACK TO THE MEWSLETTER Archive Index
