MEWSLETTER 44: FEBRUARY 4th 2006 (Issue 2) Hi everyone, and a very warm welcome to all the new subscribers who flooded through the Cat Flap at the Daily Mews since the last Mewsletter. You are all very welcome, and please feel free to pass this issue of the Mewsletter on to feline loving family members and friends. My thanks to Mrs Leny van der Veer-de Vries, in Holland, who sent me the link to the Humpback whale story that I mentioned last time. If you want to read the story in full, please click here: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/12/14/MNGNKG7Q0V1.DTL Thank you to everyone who wrote in response to Garfield’s operation on Wednesday, 18 January and for all the many prayers that were said on his behalf. The operation went well; both tumours in his mouth were removed successfully, along with 4 teeth, including one of the fangs. His kisses are sweeter-smelling now that the rotten teeth have been removed and one of the tumours was vile, full of foul smelling pus. I’ll bet he’s glad not to have that in his mouth any more. You can read more about how things went here: http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/garfieldsoperationjan06.htm I’ve posted on site a picture of Timmy putting a paw out to stop Garfield from falling down the stairs – you can see it on the Home Page. It is also here: http://www.thedailymews.com/MewsletterArchives/mewsletter41nov2505.htm It got me wondering if any other cats are protective of their siblings or of their Human families. Leny van der Veer-de Vries, from Holland, who sent me the link to the Humpback whale story, told me that her ginger female cat, Indy once warned her that something was melting in the meter cupboard, saving the family’s lives from a fire. I then read of another cat, called Macavity (another ginger cat!) who rescued his family from an inferno. When the Montague family adopted him from the Cats Protection, they had no idea that he’d save their bacon. A forgotten late-night snack threatened to reduce the family home to cinders, Macavity jumped to the rescue. As smoke filled the kitchen, Macavity woke Mum Patricia by smacking her with his paw and howling the house down. The Montague family are extremely proud of their resourceful pet – even though their microwave was a write-off! A recent ArcaMax story tells of the family cat saving the lives of a woman and her 9-month-old grand daughter as they dozed in their caravan, in PA. Princess, the 7-year-old cat, woke the woman by meowing loudly at her. She was then alerted to the smell of flames and heard crackling flames. More stories from ArcaMax can be found on this link: http://www.arcamax.com/cgi-bin/news/channel/1030 Valarie, in Florida sent me a great link that has some wonderful stories on it, but the lead story caught my eye because it was about two cats that warned their owner, Carol Smith, when her heart was beating too fast. She calls them her Four-Legged Heart Specialists. Here is the link to that story: http://www.beliefnet.com/story/183/story_18387_1.html I remember one day some years ago, Sam was looking out of the window in this office and growling at something. When I went to see what he could be growling at, I noticed the man next door who was on the ridge of our adjoining roof, mending some broken flashing. As he was partly on our side, Sam had taken it upon himself to warn John not to come any further! I laughed at the time, but also felt secretly pleased with Sam that he was protecting me. Another memory I have is when Garfield was a mere slip of a kitten and my son David and I were both recovering from the flu, the day after the hurricane hit the southern part of England where I live. David and I were both lying on the two sofas in our lounge and Garfield was looking out of the window. Suddenly, he got down and went over to David and patted him on the shoulder. The next moment, David’s school friend knocked on the door! I’m sure that some of you must have some clever felines. Well, ALL felines are clever, in my opinion, but some seem to be blessed with a bit more common sense or resourcefulness than others. Have you got any amazing stories to tell regarding their bravery, their resourcefulness in saving your lives, or maybe warned you about some impending danger??? Please write in the usual way to p.dewberry@ntlworld.com and I’ll add your stories to the website. Something that has sickened me yet again, is the continuation of using cats and dogs fur in China. Please click on this link to see shameful footage and then write to the Chinese ambassador in your own country, or write to your local representative giving them the link to this footage and ask them to do more to get this banned. http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/video.asp?video=trent_fur&Player=wm&speed=_med Once again, the subscribers to the Daily Mews are being offered a 10% discount for the month of February so you can take advantage and buy Valentine gifts for your pampered puss. For those of you in the UK please click on www.madaboutcats.com and quote MACDM0206. Those of you in the USA please go to www.catwalkfurniture.com and quote DM0206 and you’ll receive your discount also. Both sites have heaps of wonderful things that your pets can’t possibly live without – so rush over there now! Don’t forget to come back to check out all the new updates on the Daily Mews!!!! ‘Pokey’ Warren sent me some wonderful cards with a Scripture from the Bible that can be used as greeting cards or just as a little note to send to someone to cheer them up or to encourage them. The stunning photos are all by Pokey and he has said that he’ll be happy to print cat photos if any of you would like to send him pictures of your cats (or dogs, or hamsters – whatever!) Go to http://community.webshots.com/user/pokey1930 to see his photos. They all come complete with envelopes – so check it out! Before I forget – I had some awful tests done in December at a hospital in London on my heart to see if I do have angina. I got a letter the other day with the results. I DON’T have angina!!!! Thank you to everyone who prayed for me! I really appreciate it. I do have to go for some more tests, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. Called ‘Baking cookies with your cat!’ If you try it, let me know what happens. The link is here: http://www.thedailymews.com/amewsments/bakingcookieswithyourcat.htm CAT CHATWe have a first at the Daily Mews – a letter written from Heaven. Maia in Canada’s cat, Cousin, writes about his earthly life and the one cat he doesn’t miss! Click the link to read it: http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/cousin.htm Ron Hevener writes another good story where Mamie, his cat, teaches him the valuable lessons of life. You can read Ron’s latest story here: http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/forestofnoreturn.htm Those of us who have had a lifetime love affair with the cat will relate to Heather McBain’s beautiful story about Nina, her once in a lifetime cat. You can read it here: http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/onceinalifetimecat.htm Jimmy, whose story was told last month, has written his own story about what it is like trying to maintain a tough-cat attitude over 5 other felines in the house. You can read about Jimmy here: http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/topcatting.htm I found out today that Myla Smith, who wrote Vincent, died last month. She was 70 years young and had battled for 20 years with breast cancer. When I first began this website she was one of my earliest subscribers and each time I sent out a Mewsletter, she would always write to congratulate me on my writing, or give me encouragement and suggest topics for future stories or articles. We had a lovely friendship via email about all sorts of topics, not just about cats and she was a great joy to know. I shall miss her greatly. If you would like to read her obituary, please click this link http://www.md-times.com/?module=displaystory&story_id=11850&format=html Her story about Vincent the stray cat has been in the CAT CHAT section for a while, but I’d like to bring it to the forefront again, as a tribute to a remarkable woman. http://www.thedailymews.com/catchat/vincent.htm ED KOSTRO Ed’s been busy again on his 4th trip to New Orleans. What he sees saddens him because many of the left-behind animals are now virtually feral. The dogs are hunting in packs and the poignant poem OLD TOM tells of a cat that had been savaged by one such pack. http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/oldtom.htm Grey ghost is about a little female who chanced her luck when a pack of hungry dogs came near – but Ed was nearer and he rescued her from them. http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/greyghost.htm And Ed’s rescue journal, part 3, is the latest news about rescued dogs and cats in New Orleans. Please continue to give what you can to the relief funds for the rescue centres and if you are able to take in a ‘left behind’ animal, please contact me and I’ll give you Ed’s email address, or you can contact the link on the Home Page. http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/katrinarescuejournal3max.htm JIM WILLIS:More news from Jim as he writes a second anniversary tribute to the animals he lost in that tragic fire and shares his thoughts about Cleo – the visionary. http://www.thedailymews.com/articles/cleothevisionary.htmPURRFECT POETRYIn the space of a few days I received three lots of cat haiku poems. They are all very good, as you will see. The first is by Tess Ballard and was inspired by her cat, Bonkers. The second is by Marty Weiss and Tiger was his inspiration. And the third is written by a cat and is a wonderful observation of how cats perceive us humans. ENJOY!!! http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/cathaiku2.htm http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/cathaiku3.htm http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/haikuwrittenbycats.htm Lastly, is a poem I wrote back in 1997 about my cat Biggles – Garfield’s brother – and is a true representation of the facts as they occurred at the time. Hope you like it. http://www.thedailymews.com/poems/cattricks.htm Well, that’s it for another month. I hope you’ll find something you like amongst the links, and I look forward to reading your own stories, poems, and tributes about your beloved cats. Until the next time, take care and have a Purrfect month.
