Catnip Corner

My main passions in life are cats and writing and this new section combines both quite nicely. This blog is the chatty bits which are usually found at the beginning of the Mewsletter and the Scratching Post but in a bid to make both of them more user friendly, I am cutting the chatter and putting it into a blog. I hope that you'll take time out to read them and more importantly, enjoy them! I always welcome feedback so please write to me using the contact us box.

Thank you for reading.

Paws For Thought

a place where you can stop off at any time of the day to rest a while; put your feet up; have a drink and relax – perhaps with your favourite feline on your lap or nearby.

Paws for Thought is a collection of quotations written by people from all walks of life on their passion for cats. I do hope you’ll enjoy them enough that you’ll want to come by often to just sit and find peace with your feline companion while you read.

How to keep your cat safe in winter

Follow the simple guidelines below to ensure your cat is safe throughout the winter months.

Ollie in the snowIf your cat goes outside, try to ensure that he is kept inside during morning and evening rush hours so that he is off dark roads when they are at their busiest.

Fit a quick-release collar with reflective strips to increase his visibility when he is out and about.

Cats will always seek out the warmest spot so make sure yours doesn’t overheat sitting too close to a heater or radiator or from being in the airing cupboard for prolonged periods. Ensure fire guards are always used around open fires.

Take great care when topping up car anti-freeze and adding screen wash so as not to spill any. Both are highly poisonous to cats, who can be attracted by the sweet smell. Also, check beneath a warm car before driving off as a cat may be sheltering underneath.

Make sure your cat can always find shelter during poor weather. If you do not have a cat flap fitted, prop your garden shed ajar and pop a fleecy bed inside so that he can get inside if he’s caught out in the rain. Wipe any grit/rock salt from your cat’s paws or coat when he comes in, though it’s best to keep him inside if snow is forecast.

Ensure your cat can always access water if he goes outside. Water bowls will need defrosting at least twice a day in frosty weather.
